I was just thinking about our season in 2011 and just wondering about him.

He wasnt even 30 when he retired but he did ok in his final season in 2010.

Its old news anyway, but Should we of talked him to play another season after the 2010 finals?

he was in our 22 and thinking if he would of made a difference had he stayed for us in 2011.

yes agree that he would have been of use but that his body was unable to match the riggers of aAFL season

Believe he wanted to play on but wasnt wanted by Harvey.

Would of been very handy if played in midfield as our clearance specialist but Harvey if he played him wouldnt of used him there.
I would pick Harvey before Lower everyday of the week.
About the same speed but Haselby has better skills.
Lower goes in slightly harder but doesnt have the skills.

No im not bagging Lower he is a very handy player.

I thought Hasleby retired on his own accord. Definately gave us something in our run on wins earlier in the 2010 season. Found it hard to get up every week in the end.

With the power of hindsight, it's easy to say that the club made the wrong decision.

Thoughts such as these are easily generated by our apparent lack of depth this year. I would imagine that 12 months ago, the club would have expected the 2011 output of a player like Crichton to at least be on par with that of Hase. Unfortunately, some of the younger players were unable to cement a spot in our line up despite the rather large injury list.

There are actually a few of our past players who have had better WAFL seasons than some younger ones who are on our list. I am thinking of Brock O'Brien and Andrew Foster and to a lesser extent (expecting my crucifixtion for mentioning his name) Des Headland.

But without that crystal ball, making the best decisions regarding player retention is no easy task.

Even with the power of hindsight I think they made the right call. His body was shot to the point where it would have been like just another underdone player being nursed all season.

I knew he had a knee reco in 2008 but I would of thought it would of been a good Idea at the time to give him one more year as a forward flanker or a forward pocket.

Our forward press has been poor this year and having Hase down there would have made it even worse.

It's the old friend of a friend thing, but I heard Hase was pissed at the club for giving him one year and Mcphee three, so didnt want to play. Take it as you will.

I knew Hasleby would of been a year by year deal after his Knee reconstruction. I reckon he was a bit angry when he had to retire early. I reckon he was more furious when Harvey put him up as trade bait one year. I just was thinking we needed his leadership this season as we have struggled with guys like Sandilands being out injured for vital periods of the season.

Still he was one of my favourites since he stayed with us for so long. Glad he played 200 games for us. I was hoping hew was going to be a 250 game player for us.

I loved him from 2000-2004 he was bloody awesome at that time.Loved it when he had the long hair!

Best year with out a doubt was in 2003. He was all Australian along with 2 other Freo boys in Pavlich and Our then Captain Peter Bell.

He had a good point there. Hasleby was one of the most loyal players in our team.

Yet on the other hand we always talk about Players joining GWS and GC for the Cash.

Did he? I know there was talk about him walking to another club when he hadn't been offered the 2 year contract he wanted, but don't recall him being offered up for trade.

Yes it would have, but the delivery in there would have been much better - an area of major concern for us all year and especially in our horror end to the season.

In any case, though he may have been of some value, I don't think he would have been much use overall - as someone else alluded to, he would have just been one more player we were 'managing through' the season, and yea, too slow by half.

Fatboy Hase would be better than 80% of our squad even with a bung knee. Should have kept him on as long as he wanted.

You don't have to be in the top 10 to fit into the 22.

The guy was done in the midfield, did we really need another undersized slow forward?

I loved the guy when he was at his peak but his time at the club was over. He didn't have much left to offer.

Injuries and the current form slumps is affecting our vision.

Don't think it was the knee so much as his back (and back related) injuries. as much as I love Hase, I think they made the right call.

He would of been useful had he made it onto the field for most of the season. But given our teams shocking run of leg injuries I would of been suprised if he didn't suffer the same fate.

hase didnt endear himself to harves in 09 when he went bitching to the media about only being offered a 1 year deal and threatening to find another club..... he went to other clubs and nobody else would give him anything other than a 1 year deal. he did something similar in 06 i think it was, always seemed to whinge to the media and threaten to leave the club, i lost a lot of respect for him after that. couple that with the fact that he is an A grade **** as a person and im not especially upset to see the back of him
by the end of last year his body was shot and he was a liability with his lack of forward pressure anyway
