One thing i noticed on the weekend was while Campbell was poleaxed and out cold, the Port players kinda milled around, a couple of them tried to kind of get together and have a bit of a chat - i think the phrase "herding cats" was rather apt. Choco sprinted down to ground level and tried to get his players over, meanwhile Pav had rounded the troops up and was giving the boys a rev up for a couple of minutes before that even happened.

There are very very few captains in the league who have the ability and the respect to do something like that, and i take my hat off to Super Pav. This year Pav has basically sacrificed his own plaudits and game to play in the midfield, because that is the role he has been asked to do. He probably won't make AA this year, but i think he will be much happier with his season, and should close out his Nth club champion unless Hase or Duffman pinches it off him.

Great work from the Pav. :thumbsu:

too many people bag him, saying that he hasnt led well this year, that he hasnt played well, the fact is, is that he's our leading goals scorer while holding up the midfield....... i think he has been awesome again this year, alas some people arent happy unless he is kicking 6 goals a game

Just about any critism of Pav is unwarrented, is an outstanding player and leader. Although he is probably a distant 4th behind Duffield, Tarrant and Sandilands in the Doig atm

i would say hasleby tarrant and sandilands... duffield started off poorly this year

i have been one to defend Pav when people criticise him and i think he's a super player... having said that, i think he lacks in the defensive part of his game. i mentioned this in one of the other threads - it was escpecially noticeable on the weekend. his 2nd efforts are poor and he gives up on a chase too easily.

there are plenty of other players in the team who are the same and i'm not trying to single out Pav or take a shot at him, but i think those qualities are needed in a great leader. like i said - great player and captain but i think he needs to work on that part of his game to be exceptional

Pav's defensive issues are nothing new, but he is soooo good in every other area that any club will wear it and still rightly call him an elite player. Goodes is another player in a similar category, actually I think Pav is a better defensive player than Goodes and Goodes is a Brownlow medallist.

Pav has been a touch maligned this season because he's not put out the same numbers as in previous years, but he is still one of our better players - we just expect AA performances every week and when he simply delivers good we think he's had a bad day. Think of this, based on last weeks game only, would you take Suban or Pav ... because we voted in the player voting thing Suban as the 5th best Dockers player and Pav barely got a mention. Go and look at the game again with out any prejudice and decide which one you would pick ... it would be Pav every time. He was tagged to bits and still managed to be one of the more dangerous players in conditions that definitively didn't suit his body type. Suban was good and deserves the praise, but he wasn't better than Pav. The only reason Suban was higher is because of the expectation thing.

We take Pav's greatness for granted sometimes and we shouldn't, he is simply the best player to ever grace this club and has added this tremendous leadership presence to his game. Top marks for Pav this year for mine. In a rebuilding year he has been the perfect captain :thumbsu::thumbsu:

i know his defensive issues are nothing new, and i agree that he is unbelievable in every other area and definitely think he's an elite player. i love what he's given the club over the years.. i'd hate to think how we would have gone without him...

i guess the point i'm trying to make is that as the leader of the club and a guy that the young kids in the club look up to, he needs to be setting an example in this area.

i commend the way he has sacrificed his own game this year to carry the midfield and i can't think of any other area of leadership that he is lacking, so maybe i'm just being picky :)

Pav would be perhaps the only leader in the comp who say as acended above the "leading from the front" and "setting the example" kind of leaders. Perhaps Kirk from Sydney is the other, most of the others are simply either marketing ploys (Judd) or guys who set the standard (Glass etc)

I have to disagree PapaJ.

Pav is AA quality, is highly capable of producing that form week in week out, barring injury, and we should expect it. Anything less and we are being short changed. If you pay for a Ferrari and it performs like a Commodore you don't just shrug your shoulders and think "oh well, next time I take it out of the garage it'll fly".

What Pav did was admirable, and it was also what every Captain should do. He is doing some of the leadership things but also needs to lead by example on the field, and that includes chasing hard and fully committing to a contest rather than playing for a free kick.

My vote would go to Suban because he delivers to expectation and applies himself with 100% effort. That's pretty much all I ask of our players, to allow their natural talents to shine.

I think thats really expecting a bit much. If Pav played like he did against Sydney every week he would win the brownlow with 66 votes. Players like Pav have talent, ability and work ethic, and if they get stopped on the day you need to give props to the guy playing on them, as opposed to Pav just having a day where apparantly he "didn't try hard enough"

I'm speaking without seeing the game last week as I'm currently overseas, but that is like giving the kid in the class who tries hard (but is average) the top marks compared with the class genius who doesn't try as hard but gets almost 100 % every time.

If the genius in the class isnt trying hard, thus not getting 100% i would be p***ed off

Think of it this way. the new guy sits at the back and works away, noone is aware.

The genious sits at the front, and has someone leaning over his shoulder writing down wrong answers and wasting his time.

no... a coach who works very closely with his players. I reckon Pav is coaching material, the Messiah, the Favourite son coming back and coaching at Freo would be awesome when his career is over.
