Hi Guys,
I know there has been talk of match up choices from the game last week and I thought I would post a blog from game day penned by scott pendlebury. He discusses who was played on him and hopefully this'll give you an insight from the other side of the fence and might add to the discussions that are being had. I'm certainly interested to see what you all think.
I've omitted the pre and post game stuff as it didn't seem relevant on an Essendon board.
The full article is on the pies website.
Good luck this week.
First quarter
Started at centre half-forward. We knew there were going to be some match ups we could try and take advantage of down there, because without Pebs (Anthony Rocca) we had myself, Trav and Medders as the three main targets, and I ended up with Courtney Johns which was interesting, as I thought I would try and work him and get most of my ball on the lead, but then I moved into the midfield probably 10 minutes in and spent some time on Bachar Houli and Jobe Watson. I felt pretty good in the first quarter, I think the enthusiasm on the ground was good by us.
Second quarter
I played in the midfield again, and there were so many changes I didn’t really have a specific opponent, I just had to keep an eye on whoever my opponent was at the time. I felt like we broke them in that quarter with our pressure, and eventually built a good lead.
Half time
It felt like a position we’d been in a lot in the past, up by four or five goals and needing to put the foot on the throat. We haven’t done that enough, so that was the main focus, to close the game down in the third quarter and put the result beyond chance.
Third quarter
I started on the wing on Patty Ryder, and that was an interesting match up because of his height, and I had to try and stop him from pushing forward and take a grab on me, so any opportunity I had I tried to push forward and make him work hard defensively, and I ended up finding a bit of the footy which was good.
4th quarter
I started on the bench, and probably spent 15 or 16 minutes there in total for the last quarter, which was good, to be able to sit on the bench in the last quarter and relax a little bit, knowing you’re winning by that much, so that was a good way to finish. Perhaps in the past it would’ve been more show time had we been up by that much, but I feel we stuck to our game, and our pressure remained good.
