Considering the crap the board of the AFC tend to receive I thought I'd do a little research and found a very odd name pop up.

Googled the name found out he's with the AHA and owns a few pubs but what the hell does this guy know about football operations??

No footy experience on or off field whatsoever from what I can establish, yet ends up as our Deputy Chairman? I understand the board needs some buiness knowledge but surely the second in charge should have some footy experience.

As they say its not what you know but who you know.

So? What happens if you do a knee injury when your 15 and can never play but have a great understanding of the game

just because you couldn't play at the highest level you can't be involved ?

So I gather you have a deep list of personal business credentials that inform your judgement here? or are you whinging and bitching for the sake of it?

Jesus I thought I was joining in the chorus here but apparently not.

Not discussing his business credintials at all

Just thought football operations experience would be a prerequisite to eb the deputy chairman of an AFL team

if you don't know anything about the guy, or what is expected of him in the role, then there isn't much to go by.

I don't know anything about the above, and by the sounds of it, neither do you.

Hurley is president of the SA branch of the AHA (Australian Hotels Association).
The AHA has the greatest political clout in the state.
Hurley has clout in politics and business, I would suspect that some of our sponsors came on board because of him, and you can be sure that with his weight behind us that every major business returns our calls.
That's enough to get the job IMO, but there are probably plenty more reasons.
Most clubs have one or two of these types on their board, look at Matherson at Carlton for instance.
Just sound business is all.

A deputy chairman's role is more about the day to day running of the club and its' finances than it is about football. The majority of decisions that they are required to make, revolve around finances, rules and compliance with the AFL rules of operation. Therefore it is not a requirement to have anything other than a general knowledge of the game.

There are plenty of others on the board with football experience, so a good balance is healthy. Undoubtedly Hurley has exceptional contacts and probably brings more to the club, than the club can bring to him. He is in partnership with Roo and Goody in their hotels, so he is also providing a good mentoring for our players and their futures. The board appoints the coach and it seems they got it right in regards to Craigy, so there's no reason to assume that they weren't fully informed of the options and also had the benefit of Triggy's input to the process. A non-football person is still able to objectively determine the right decision based on the info. presented by those doing the presentations on the merits of each candidate. When I came into my business, I knew nothing about the products or processes that were involved, but with the guidance of those in the know, you can form solid judgements based on others' experience and recommendations.

Anyone who does not understand Peter Hurley's importance to our board has no idea of how professional the Adelaide football Club is. Juggling with such matters as the salary cap is not easy .. and we Crows supporters who are true would be giving thanks Peter gives his time to the club.

that's some very serious allegations you're making there.

Ah, the man who didn't show up at the mall.

My remarks are that AFL football is business, Peter is a businessman with great success and his vision in managing contracts and understanding the AFL commercial operations is a blessing for our club.

talking out of your backside again huh? seeing as hurley has no involvement with negotiating contracts, you're trying to big note yourself by suggesting you have knowledge of his involvement helping the club rort the salary cap.

oh well, at least you're making stuff up about someone other Rucci.

well you tell me who else on the board has the business craftiness that peter does so that we can manage and project salary cap management not just for this uear but three years in advance.

it's not just about contracts but budgets. he is a genius with money and planning!

Bill Sanders, Steven Trigg, John Sutton and Alan Sheppard are the 4 members of our board who I am sure have done their MB. Surely between at least the 2 of them there would be enough brains and experience in business that would make managment of the salary cap a reasonably easy exercise.

What makes you say Peter Hurley is not better than all of them combined in dealing with football budgets?

And what makes you say he is??????

You made sound that he is the be all and end all as far as salary cap goes and I disagree with that strongly. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get MB especially back in those days and we have 3 or 4 people on out board with that qualification and experince to back it up.

Peter Hurley has proven it by action. Not just in his business but in dealing with governments for legislation. He is a master in practice not a master in letters from some university.
