I sit just me or does he think that he can ALWAYS kick a goal on the run??? I mean yesterday he gets a free kick on the 50m line and instead of taking his time and having ago at a set shot.. he try to show off and play on.... not even scoring and kicking it out on the full. Also I think i can plead a case for Wilson..yesterday i noticed everytime Wilo would go to make a lead Frido would run into his space cutting him off. When is going to realise that he's a crumber.. C R U M B E R, not a leading full forward.Im not denying the fact that hes a important part of our team, but lets face it he doesnt have the height or strentgh like a Llyod or Treadrea has. If I was Woosha id tell Matera to tie him self to the goal post and hang around to pick up the spoils, then kick his a**y goals. Let Haynes whos a a good solid mark ( needs to improve on his kicking tho), make the leads.

( Im not tryn to write Frido off, i mean i luv him, and when hes on fire hes dangerous, but we need to face facts)

What r ure thoughts???

There are two sides to Phil Matera. On one hand, he is a selfish git. Nobody can take that away from him- give him the ball anywhere within 50m from goal, and he's never ever going to dish off.
Yesterday Fido took a mark about 45m out on an acute angle, and Staker took off and sprinted to the goal square to give a tall option if Fido wanted to chip it short, I had a bit of a giggle when i saw that, thinking 'you'll learn, lad.' The rest of the team just stood around, because they knew there was not a snowball's chance of matera dishing off.
However, there are worse things out there than a forward prepared to kick goals. Phil Matera is bloody quick on the lead, has a strong set of hands, and is one of the most accurate kicks on the league. A pack mark he ain't, but when you a metre in front of your opponent, sprinting to the ball, it doesn't really matter how tall you are as long as the midfield disposal is bang on?
Who would you rather have kicking on goal, anyway, Fido or Troy '25m out directly in front' Wilson? In most instances, Phil Matera is actually doing the team thing by being selfish- (with the possible exception of Sampi and Embley) he's about the best damn kick we have from a set shot out to about 40m, so leaving it to other players to mark isn't the percentage option.

There are times when he goes overboard in the selfish gimp stakes (that snap across the body from 50m made me cringe), but thats his prerogative- the guy is the best small forward in the league, and he's allowed to back himself, just so long as the foolish decisions don't start to mount up.

I just dont understand where this could possibly come from. Matera is by far the best small forward in the league, is having arguably his best season for us and has kicked 51!!! goals this season while missing 3 through injury!

If you want to rag on anyone this season, Matera is not the person to start on.

They're half right.

Phil does lead into pockets, which pushes us wide and indirect or alternatively he takes up the space that Wilson or Haynes needs to lead into from FF.

But I'm not surprised because for too long this season he has had to be the main target, so it's difficult to change your game midstream.

Ever considered that he is better at kicking goals on the run than by set shots? Ever considered that he may have been too far out to have a set shot? It's not like many players were making good leads (all day). He is definately greedy, but I don't think he's a show off.

Phil Matera is obviouisbly a selfish player, but it's probably a good thing more than it's a bad thing because he doesn't miss to many shots at goal.

fido's nose featured on after the game on saturday night...
