This thread is asking:

i) Do you think we will use our final round draft pick (selection 58) in the National Draft...

and if so...

ii) Do you think the player we should aim to get is a
- rookie (colts/tac cup)
- uncontracted player
- wafl player

I wouldn't mind seeing us use the pick to get Brett Lecras from West Perth or maybe a Brett Jones from Claremont.

If Michael (?) Embley doesn't get picked up should we look to rookie list him. To be honest I don't know a lot about him, except he should only be picked up/rookie listed on his merits and not because his brother plays for us.

i) Yes, we will use it.

ii) An u18 player. It will depend on who we pick up with the other picks. I have said before that I believe that we will take 2 talls and 2 smalls. We may pick Embley (prefer rookie) or we may even chose a smokie like Rowan Bonson. I think we will only take a wafl backman if the draft doesn't pan out as hoped.

I would like to see us use pick 58 only if a decent player is still available.

A project player such as Pettigrew LeCras or Jones or even Dylan Harper who seems to have been forgotten this year.

Some of the Phantom Drafts have Bonson and Michael Johnson going as low as 58 and if a player of that calibre were available I would like to see them snapped up.

You never know we might have someone else tucked away somewhere that we have been hiding.

Michael Embley (thats his name) is 200cm... so he'll probably take a while to develop, so if they're gonna pick him, they'd have to rookie list him. Its probably better to use the picks up instead of Pre-season... who's there btw

your nose....

Alot of conjecture as it gets shallow around here it has been suggested (probably even earlier), definite gamble area here.

You guys are apparently very interested in a kid Ben Clifton from the Calder Cannons. WCE have spoken to him a number of times and whilst nothing is assured, as we all know, don't be surprised to see his name read out for you guys.

If thats so, I'd be interested to hear a bit about this kid?

According to Goalden Hawk via Hawkheadquarters

Not expected to go until 3rd Round

Ben Clifton

Details:
Club: Greenvale
DOB: 5 Apr 85 Hgt: 191cm Wgt: 84kg
Position: Centre Half Forward
Natural foot: Right

Honours:
Victoria Metro 2003
National Draft Camp Invitee 2003

TAC Stats:
2002: 6 games, 10 goals, 9.0 PPG.
2003: 12 games, 14 goals, 13.5 PPG.

Profile:
The son of former 3DB racecaller Terry, Clifton is a centre half forward who has come on this year to be a real chance of getting picked up.

Ben played for Victoria Metro at under 16 level before contracting glandular fever and struggling for a year. Calder then dropped him on the eve of the finals last year. However, he was much more productive in 2003, mostly as a marking forward.

Clifton is easy to recognise with his blonde hair. His main strength is overhead, is very strong even in a contested situation. He has a good leap on him (top 10 at draft camp) and appears to be fairly athletic.

There are a few things that make me wary however. Clifton tends to drop his head at times and can be a bit lazy, such as not chasing and giving away silly free kicks. His field kicking is OK, usually passes the ball well. However, he can get the yips in front of goal, doesn't seem totally confident.

Has pretty good pace over 20 yards too. I think given his size and athleticism he will go around the middle of the draft, but I'm not totally sold yet. "

I would prefer Michael Johnson myself.

After giving you the tip last week this was on the AFL site

26. West Coast – Daniel McConnell
(Eastern Ranges) 21 June 1986, 190cm, 83kg

West Coast’s final selection in the draft will be an interesting one, with the likes of Burges – if he hasn’t been selected at No.11 or No.20 – and Calder Cannons’ forward Ben Clifton right in the mix. Clifton could be the one claimed with the Eagles third pick, if McConnell is overlooked or already taken. But there is no doubt that McConnell, an emerging young forward/defender, is firmly on West Coast’s agenda.
