Review Pies 2011 Trade Week

Well without knowing the approximate positions of where Yagmoor and Elliot would have gone in the phantom drafts I think the Pie recruiters have done the reverse of what I would have preferred.

We seem to be in a great position where we have many players in the VFL that should be playing senior footy. Now I know you need depth for for injuries that are bound to strike but still you can still only have 22 players out there on grand final day, and hence that 22 need to be the best possible. There’s no point having a good starting 18 and then another 15 decent fringe players when only 4 of those will fit in (or 7 in case of injuries). You’re better off having a good 22 and 5 decent fringe players.

I would have thought that Collingwood should have in addition to Toovey, Macaffer, McCarthy, also aggressively shopped around Goldsack & Blair with the hope that possibly at least two (hopefully three) of these guys would find new homes, and then with the draft picks we’d get, somehow combine/swap/upgrade them and our initial draft picks into signing up one gun player from another club

Even if we got rid of any three of them, which would create two open positions to the grand final team (Let’s assume we traded Goldsack, Macaffer and Blair). We would then have that gun player slot into the team and any one of those not traded still stays/comes in, (say Toovey) also getting rid of three would take up the same amount of salary cap one good player and two minimum wage draft recruits would, so no problem with salary cap.

We still have Nathan Brown to come back and replace Tarrant when he retires, Keefe can then be the tall defender injury backup.
From the half back line to the half forward line we would still not able to squeeze into the team Beams, McCarthy, Sinclair, Rounds, Mooney, Young, Bolton, Josh Thomas, Ugle, Seedsman
The forward line is the only depth weakness with no immediate backup, but perhaps the gun player they target could play forward, or we could push Didak, Krakouer, D Thomas into a more permanent forward as opposed to midfield role.

(I’m assuming we’ll simply delist Dick & Buckley)

For rucks we obviously have Witts and Ceglar to develop and take over from Jolly and Wood.

Not all of those midfield type kids will make it but clearly there is a lot of decent talent there that cant all get into the one team, hence would have been better off with another gun player in the team over a decent player in a position, along with 2 others who would also just be decent in that role (providing you still have at least 1 good genuine depth player in each of defense, midfield, forward, ruck).

I stopped reading there, Blair, are you kidding me? He was top 5 in the Copeland at the half way mark of the season, and like the rest of the team, faded late in the season.

You would get next to nothing for Goldsack or Blair on the open market anyway, as shown by the fact McCarthy and Macaffer were basically ingored in trade week.

We've done what we needed to do, we have topped up our youth without even having a pick in the first 2 rounds, IT'S A STUNNING EFFORT FROM HINE AND CO.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

We're in premiership mode, we need the best players available including as depth. It's not a time where you want to be spending too much time (especially at the cost of the team) to be developing players. Salary cap also plays a big part in it so simply trading fringe players to get 1 good player isn't going to be a good strategy. You're also banking big time on not getting injuries if you do that.

I think that's a reasonable assessment Rummy and while I'm relatively content with our trade week I agree with some of your points. Anyway, Blair is no superstar and won't be best 22 next year IMO.
