Apologies if this has already been picked up...

I was reading up on Jonathan Trott's form on the Windies tour, and noted that in addition to having a lean run in the Test matches, he also scored 0 and 2 in a tour match. The only confusion, is that it was a 2-day match, with only 1 innings per team. Trott, along with a few other players, actually batted for BOTH sides;

Granted, it's just a tour match and wouldn't even have first-class status. But I wondered if there were any other prominent instances of players playing against themselves?

Probably the most famous occurrence was in 1884. Australia v England. At one stage, England were short a fielder (not sure why) and so the Australian Captain Billy Murdoch (who had already batted in the innings) subbed for them. He proceeded to catch Australia's top scorer Harry Scott.

had to do that in junior cricket once. cant remember how many fielders they had but it wasnt enough so i had to go out and help for numbers. they put me at mid on and im standing there hoping i dont have to do anything and what do you my captain hits it right to me. picked me out perfectly and i couldnt have got out of the way even if i tried. straight into the hands. i felt like the biggest knob. both coaches gave me a pat on the back for being a good sportsman and not dropping it but it didnt feel great. and we lost.

Same thing happened to me. They put me in mid-wicket and the ball is hit in my direction where I would normally catch it around knee length. I had intended to let the ball bounce off my hands and then throw the ball in to the keeper. However my fielding instincts took over and the ball just stuck to my hands. Someone else from my team also caught out one of our own players. I've now learnt from this experience that you've got to make sure the ball doesn't hit your hands at all. Misread the ball at all costs.

In U14s our captain used to open the batting, then open the bowling, then when he'd finished his spell he'd take over the keeping til he was ready to bowl again.

I'm sure he would of batted for both teams of he could.

Let me guess... his Dad was the coach as well.
