I purchased an Icom IC-R5 scanner recently and I listen to it at every opportunity. Currently listening into the chase of the mirrabooka escapee from last week.

Anyone on here have a scanner and can relate to any stories that they have heard on it?

How much do they cost? I think it would be a fair bit for a good quality one.

My Scanner cost $329 and from what I am hearing it is one of the best hand helds around.

I used to have a handheld one, which was "warm" and cost me only $80 about 10 years ago, this was top of the range at the time.

Got many good hours of listening to the police in Tassie right up and down the state, Hobart was by far the busiest place.
Then Tasmania Police changed all their frequencies from analogue to digital in August 1998, by going to the Ericsson Split-Channel system, and listening to them via my old set-up became obselete.
A bloke I used to knock around with was able to procure a desktop scanner and was able to uncover their digital frequencies and was able to uncover them a few years ago, but it was hard and disjointed to listen to as every conversation used to jump frequencies and channels.
Tasmania Police have a loads of trouble with the digital setup, because of the mountainous terrain throughout the state, and find them at times to be useless as t1ts on a bull.
They should go back to analogue :thumbsu:

Sorry to dig up this dead topic, but just to anyone in WA considering buying a scanner, be forewarned as WA Police are changing to digital radio technology very soon which will essentially mean from what I've been told by the techies that scanners will no longer work.

Just an FYI so you don't risk wasting money.

I have one I turn on whenever I hear sirens around here.

Funniest thing I heard was when Police where called to a park in Gorokan where some youths had stolen a womens handbag and were on the roof of the toilet block taurnting her, throwing bottles and "masterbating".

Why would a general member of the public want one of these?

Surely there are better things to do?

Maybe so. However they are interesting to listen to. I own one and it usually is in the car with me during my trip. Some of the things i have heard :S . I also have another one which i am looking at selling off.

I don't understand why they are made available to the public?

Wondering the same thing. Heres an example. Myself and a friend went to the Melbourne airport with a scanner each. Virgin blue we were not aloud past security. As Qantas and Chubb let us in. There is nothing wrong with em as long as we dont use it in regards to a crime. As much as the police have tried to stop em lol.

Friday night and sat nights are the best no doubts there :)
