IMO Portishead all the way.

This is not to say that Massive Attack aren't also brilliant, but Portishead just has so much more style. And Beth Gibbons' voice gives me chills.

For any Beth Gibbons fans - be sure to check out Out of Season. It's not Portishead, but it is very cool.

The fact Portishead only released 2 studio albums added to the fact Mezzanine is IMO one of the best electronic albums ever made tips the scales in favour of Massive Attack for mine though.

I'd also like to throw Tricky's solo stuff into this conversation as well. His Maxinquaye album sits comfortably amongst any of the albums being talked about in this thread so far.

I do find polls like this a struggle. I really am not into this my band/artist is better than yours type debate. It is all in the ear of the listener. I have had Joanna Newsom Ys on my player every day for the last 2 weeks but my wife hates her voice. I love her voice. Each to their own.

In terms of influance Massive Attack have IMO offered more in that they are in the vanguard of the Trip Hop style but Dummy stands along side Blue Lines and Mezzanine. Protection is an underated album as well. Massive Attacks last release was unfortunately a failure.

I will check Tricky out as I only know his Massive Attack songs.
