This is a list of possible number one draft picks according to Matt Burgan. This would mean that picks 1-6 in the draft have a great deal of potential - obviously - and therefore if we finish 12th or lower we could get our hands on a quality key forward.

What would be better - scraping into the finals or pick 5/6?

Note however that Cordy is eligble as Western Bulldogs father son and Trengrove has a serious knee injury.

Nick Naitanui
WA, 04/05/1990, 197cm, 95kgs

Daniel Rich
WA, 07/06/1990, 183cm, 83kgs

Chris Yarran
WA, 19/12/1990, 180cm, 84kgs

Hamish Hartlett
SA, 14/08/1990, 182cm, 74kgs

Jack Watts
Vic, 26/03/1991, 194cm, 85kgs

Jackson Trengove
Vic Metro, 02/11/1990, 196cm, 77kgs

Ayce Cordy
Vic Country, 202cm, 87kgs

Better to develop the skills and attitude of 42 players rather than damage their progress by tanking in the hope of one player who may or not turn out to be a Bryce Gibbs or Kepler Bradley.

Despite what I have said in the past, I'd take Bryce Gibbs in a heartbeat if he was our first pick this year. He is really starting to come along. He's the same age as everyone drafted in last years draft too.

Off the point a little but...

This is why AFL craps all over The NRL in many ways.
Here it is still June, & we can start to seriously talk about which youngsters may or may not come to our club.
Also, after the finals (even if we are not involved), we still have plenty of interest with Trade Week, The Draft & the PSD still to come.
Makes for a "shorter" off season + there is little if any real specualtion mid-season of which player may or may not sign where. (OK just a little)

With the NRL, players sign with other clubs for the next year during the current season. There is also no publicised draft as far as I know so after the final in early October, everone dissapears with a hangover until the pre-season starts the next year.

The only time League hits the news up here in the off-season is if some meat head is found drunk in The Cross or fondles some chick at a nightclub!

They all sound good, and obviously the 6 players Matt Burgan outlines half way through the season as his top picks are the only players who could possibly go on to have a good career from the upcoming draft.

Steady on, hes just outlining who the best 17 and 18yo kids are atm, nothing to do with future predictions

I'd rather finish as high as possible and then do the best we can with whatever pick we get. Who is rated as the top seven doesn't mean much in June anyway. Gourdis was top ten a few weeks before the last draft and didn't get drafted at all until the PSD.

Note - Watts is bottom age... year 11 this year so would probably not join us full-time until 2010 if we got him.

Not a reason not to take him, but worth remembering

Year 11 and he's 194cm and 85Kgs?

I dare say he's still growing...

As for Yr 12, a FF isn't going to do much in his first few years, so no big loss. Get him to train as best he can and play him for a year in the Coburg 2's ( although of course many here will scream blue murder at the concept ).

There are a few players I wouldn't mind seeing at Richmond at this early stage.

These 2 players I would love to see us nab with our first pick:

Micheal Hurley - arguably the best KP defender in the U/18's and at 192 cm & 88kg could possibly slot into the line up from the start. If we could nab Hurley it could solve our problems at CHB.

Jack Watts - although he is only 17 he seems to be fairly well built if that weight is accurate. Don't need to be drafting tall skinny kids who get knocked over by a stiff breeze. Wouldn't say no to Watts coming to Richmond as we could give him a couple of years at Coburg while Richo still ran around.

These 3 I would be more than happy if they were to last until our second pick or later:
Lewis Johnstone - another 17 year old who seems to be fairly well off in terms of weight, 87kg in the prospectus at the start of the year. Another KP forward who is having a good championships. At 192cm is not overly tall but certainly knows how to kick goals with 31 in 20 games at U/17's level in SA last year. Took 10 marks and had 14 possies a few weeks back in champs. Game before that he scored 4 goals in 24 minutes of game time.

Tom Lynch - 190cm utility from Sandringham who looks like he can do it all. Last year suffered a season ending knee injury but before then was averaging 24 disposals, 9 marks, 6 hardball gets, 6 inside 50's and 2 goals a game. A few weeks back in an U/18's champs game he finiahsed with 21 disposals, 6 marks and 4 goals.

Nick Suban - small at 179cm but will be a gun, averaged 19 possies & 5 tackles a game last year. Was named in the U/18's AA side last year. Could be the small defender we have been desperate for.

I've been thinking we really need a big bodied quality forward but if we have pick 6-8 and the best forwards are gone should we look for another quality mid? West Coast proved you can win a premiership without star forwards but i don't think many sides in my memory have shown you can win one without a star midfield and a solid defense. I would argue that we have the makings of a quality back line but we are short another star mid. Johnson (although he is no star is very handy) will be gone soon enough, so will Brown and as good as Axel, Lids, and Cotch are we probably need another one of similar quality plus a fit Coughlan to add to the mix.

Mostly in reference to this comment...

They do all look like good players though. I saw Jack Watts a few weeks ago when he kicked the winning goal with 3 seconds to go against Vic Country. He took some great contested marks, and it's surprising that he's almost a year younger than lots of his opponents.

If either were available at our pick, i'd take Watts or Mckernan :thumbsu:
these 2 players are exactly what we need.
round 1. kpf
round 2. kpf
round 3. ruck unless we can poach warnock
round 4. inside mid

psd 1. ruck
psd 2. ruck
psd 3. small defender

out of our current rookie,s just keep c.collard & dump the rest.

i agree with you on watts...mind you...haven't personally seen any of these boys play but according to the write ups....my preference would be watts...apart from richo..we still dont' have an out and out game breaker big forward..and while it's putting alot of pressure on the young bloke....i think it was shown that he has the skills and also importantly the mental strength to win a game for his team at crunch time...
the fact that he's underaged is even more of a bonus...

I'd love:

R1: Hurley (unlikely, so Watts would be fine, though he has been elevated largely on the back of 1 very very good game in the Carnival).

Watts is actually no certainty to nominate, though he probably will to max chances of staying in Victoria

R2: Tom Swift (bit like the most highly ranked midfielder in the draft - Daniel Rich who will go top 3) - but has had a ful reco on one knee and hurt ligaments in the other... Would otherwise be a Top 10 certainty

R3: Exchange for R Warnock

R3 #2 (exchange for Pettifer): Hannebury (HBF - Qld, though I think he's at Xavier now)

R4: DeBoer - WA mid, though not superb disposal, even if he gets a heap of it. I'm right into dreamland territory here as he'll probably go Top 30.

R5: Simon Fletcher. Just jokes. I have no idea. A tall

Michael Pickering's kid also a chance for f/s...

Note that Melbourne, Blues and Dons likely to favour KPP's too, so we may be left with a lesser KPP like Trengrove or heaps of mids like Yarran

3 rucks??? I don't think we're THAT hard up.

I suspect if we felt we were that badly off, we'd upgrade cartledge at the very least.

I'd like another mid though...modern footy is about 12 midfielders, you really need to recruit at least 2/year just to keep some flowing through the system.

Hurley seems to have dropped off a lot of peoples radars...Not sure we need another key backman ( With Thursty & Rance ), but it's an interesting option.

Unlike many around here, I'd be happy enough with another quality mid..you can never have too many, so I'd rather another mid than overpay for a KP...If you have to pay pick 6/7 for a KF 'worth' pick 10-15, you might as well wait until the second round and pick one up there.

Don't know about that, in fact I hope we don't go anywhere near the PSD, we won't have a good enough pick.

I can really only see us taking only 4 players in the National Draft

1st Round. Best Available (preference for kpp) Hopefully Watts if not then Hurley
2nd Round. Ruck
3rd Round. Inside Mid
4th Round. Best Available, there's always someone who slides (hopefully we can package some later picks with a player to upgrade)

I agree with you that we need to delist all our rookies except Collard. We need to stock up with kids too due to the concessions for the new clubs in future years.

The biggest thing here most people are forgetting is that we will most likely trade away at least one of our picks.

My hope is that we get past trade period without that happening. Only then should we contemplate who to select.

Essendon did it back in 2000 and 2001 season.

Although we were a great defensive team.

the reason i would suggest we take 3 ruckman is
i dont rate cartledge as an afl ruckman & simmons only has another 1-2 years left in him.
which leaves us with graham,pattisson,putt
putt is more of a foward than a ruckman & patto isnt really a #1 ruckman we need 1 ready made & 2 developeing ruckman on our list.

but we should also take 2 kpf mckernan, watts, trengove in that order.
