Can Jack Steven become a better kick? He's 25, so it is a reasonable question.

Geary has been very good recently at shutting down his direct opponent: Bruest, Dahlhaus, Zorko, Smith... he'd be hard to leave out.

I think the writing is on the wall a little bit for Gilbert. Murdoch is contracted for next year. Pressure is on Siposs. McKeznie may not be a great kick but he is an excellent creative handpasser. I'm still not totally sold on Acres.

Webster obviously didn't have his greatest game but he still collected 20 disposals. In the past we would've been happy with that alone. Only hit the 30 game mark a week or two ago as well.

His kicking reminds me of early days Newnes. Some pearlers thrown in with some absolute howlers, now Newnes is without a doubt one of our best and consistent kicks. Very confident Webster will put it all together and when he does it's going to be a joy to watch.

Interesting you say that about Newnes I personally don't think his kicking is as good as some say.

Definitely happy with his progress as a player though.

I see Jack Newnes as a Jack of all trades type, he really doesn't have a weakness but is very competent in every facet of the game. He is top 3 or 4 in nearly every stat at the Saints except hit outs. His kicking isn't outstanding but he never really misses a target by hand or foot. To me he is a very good player but the only thing keeping him from being a superstar type is he has no party tricks or x factor. I always thought that of Joey though and he developed a bit more gamesmanship as he got older and wilier.

Roberton has a better kick on opposite foot than some guys using their natural foot on our list.
Hard to believe this time last year he was hobbling around on one foot at Sandy looking gone for all money.

What an absolute gun-slinger!

Preseason he said his ankle was only moving about 10% of normal range. How we didn't work it out earlier I can't work out. I was really excited after seeing him play his first game in St Kilda colours in the NAB the year he arrived. He was our best player that night. Really pleased to see him getting to be the player he looked like becoming. He's a nice quiet sweet guy too, I hope he keeps improving as he has a huge scope. He could be a tall midfielder even I reckon -Nate Roberton?

McKenzie may not be a great kick but he is an excellent creative handpasser.
Not sure on what basis you're saying that. Kicking is a strongpoint for McKenzie. You may not see it at AFL level yet, but once he adjusts to the pace of the game, it'll be evident. I do recall a switch he did on the wing against the Bulldogs and it was perfect, and it wasn't a fluke. Be patient mate, he's a great kick

Really helpful insight from a couple of GWS locals on Saintsational:

I was at the game and the conditions were close to impossible.

Firstly, it's a funny shaped ground, long with hardly any pockets (like Kardinia Park), then there was a gale that swirled around inside the stadium for most of the match and the surface was spongy in areas.

As soon as I walked in I thought we'd be up against it. GWS knew the ground & trained on it, so they always had a huge advantage. I even thought to myself that maybe the shape of the ground was a Sheedy Conspiracy, but dismissed that theory as surely the ground was designed by others. At half time a local asked me what I thought about their little stadium. I commented on the grounds unusual dimensions, to which he replied "Yeah, Sheedy had it designed that way, exactly like Geelong's".
It appears Sheedy did indeed conspire to give them a significant home ground advantage! As they rise, they'll be near impossible to beat there.

Players weren't holding marks, because the ball would deviate in the wind a few feet from their hands, long kicking was difficult and the only player on the ground unaffected by all this was Jeremy Cameron and he was the difference between the sides at half time. After half time we had obviously worked out how to play the ground and wind and hence our domination for the next 35-40 minutes. Unfortunately, we were wasteful when dominating and then gifted GWS their first goal in 40 minutes.

It was hardly a shocker, I left the game pleased because we will be contenders along with GWS in the (nearer than you think) future and we have nothing to fear from them. Despite all their draft concessions, we match up nicely.

I was also there and concur - had my 10 year old and we had to change seats to the other side of the ground to get out of the wind
What I would add was that we won the toss - but not knowing the ground (???) seemed to choose the wrong way to kick and put us at disadvantage from the get go ..
The other thing was whoever looks after boot choice seemed to misread the ground ( it looked in very good Nic) as our guys slipped over at virtually every contest whilst Gws blokes seemed not to be having any trouble keeping their feet -- we seemed to sort that out in the second half

All in all a dirty day
