Powell, taller I think and more of a ball winner in close. Also seems to kick a few goals from the midfield.

Alvey. I like Powell but I think Alvey is a few years younger and starting to play some good footy. Powell was dropped a couple of times (well at least once) this year by the Dees for poor form.

Alvey close to new deal with Dogs

Bulldog Mark Alvey, who a week ago was set to seek a new home through the pre-season draft, appears certain to stay at Whitten Oval after talking with coach Peter Rohde and joining pre-season training for the first time yesterday morning.
Football manager Stephen Newport said Alvey was yet to sign for the 2003 season, and would still only be offered a one-year contract. "It looks as though we're close to coming to terms," Newport said.
"He probably just needed to speak with the coach and get a feel for where he was at. That's helped to satisfy him."
The midfielder was almost traded to Essendon during the exchange period.
look like he,s staying!
if he wasnt and out of the 2 and all being equal[salary cap] id take powell.
powell if you remmeber was one of the most improved players in his 1st year at melbourne then the dreaded o/p struck.
with our salary cap situation id say we will target someone like craig bolton from the lions. a handy backup for our defence.

I would go with Powell - we need all the ball winners we can get (as we've been a bit light on for them of late). Alvey doesn't seem that special to me at all!

I don't think i'd go for Powell as he seems to be very injury prone

Personally I reckon I would take BOLTON over both of them.
Only because POWELL has a history of the big OP disease and ALVEY I am not to sure about, but if Essendon were after him I suppose he must have something to offer. I am not bagging ALVEY it is just that I haven't seen much of him where as BOLTON has proved he is there about in the best team in the last decade.
Surely he would have to cut it at Tigerland.
