After playing an absolute crap game against Essendon, Cunningham took control of the midfield and had a blinder, kicking 3 good goals including a cracker from the boundary line in the first 30 seconds of the game.

Freo were missing Simmonds, Haselby, Pavlich, Waterhouse, Walker, McPharlin, Bell, Thornton, Cook, Headland, Carr and Farmer, which gave the young blokes a good chance to show their stuff.

David Mundy was very good in the backline today, getting plenty of the ball and using it very well. He was probably one of the best for freo today and looks like a ready made backman, rather than a player who is switched from attack to defence.

Steven Dodd was very solid off the half back flank and hit targets with some good handballs and long kicks. He also tackled very hard putting pressure on the crows.

Gilmore followed up on his good form against essendon, showing great poise in defence. He has a long left foot kick and would have had the most clearances from the defensive 50.

Dunn started to show why he was recruited, he must have had at least 8 tackles and was good in the clinches. Spent quite alot of time on the bench, but had an impact when he came on.

Edgecumbe was on and off the bench, but got quite a bit of the ball. I think he will play some senior footy this year for sure.

Apart from those blokes, Hayden was probably equal BOG with Cunningham, he was absolutly awesome in defence. Schammer took up the role of bell and was a real leader in the middle. He was very vocal and a player others looked toward for instructions.

Mudhurst showed that the extra weight has done him well and didn't get pushed around too much today. I'm still dirty that his mark wasn't paid in the 3rd quarter, it would have been the mark of the year for sure.

All in all it was a very good effort by the young blokes.

Thanks for that. I fell asleep on the couch & didnt know the score.

Just quickly...

Hayden was our best in my opinion. Thought he was a class above everyone else.

Gilmore looked good off half back.

How big was that kick from Dunn in the 3rd Q? Must have gone 65m.

Most of the youngsters were impressive... all of them featured in some nice players. Probably was least impressed by Johnson.

Cunningham made up for his shocker last week with 3 goals.

Schammer looked like he was our most experienced midfielder... he looks set for a big year.

Edgecumbe looked pretty good.

Medhurst looked lively in the forward line. J-Lo and Polak didn't really get much opportunities up forward.

Haddrill carved up Perrie but then came off injured and Polak went back onto him and did a decent job.

It was just good seeing all the younsters back themselves and play a real good game of footy.

How did the draftees go? Not sure of the team lists so I'd appreciate a report on them thanks.

Murphy - Gave Carey too much room in the first half and was soundly beaten. Played a better 2nd half and did one nice play in the middle where be basically beat 2 Adelaide opponents and handballed it off.

Peake - Didn't notice much of him to be honest.

Mundy - Started on the bench, came on and did a good job spoiling. Also looks pretty poised and has a good kick on him

Dunn - Laid some tackles, was hard at it and got a bit of the ball. Made a couple of disposal errors as well, but looks to be a decent kick. Started off on the bench as well.

Campbell - Still needs a lot of development and to bulk up but looks like he could be a player. Looked good in the forward line, don't think he got the ball a whole lot but when he got it, he looked impressive. Looks like he has a very good kick also.

Campbell spent most of the first half on the bench, but provided a target at CHF when he came on. He seems pretty agile for a big bloke and set up a goal with a good handball. He also tackled hard, putting real pressure on the crows coming out of defence.

Murphy looked good when he got the ball and improved alot as the game went on. He got burnt by Carey in the first half because he gave him too much latitude. He is a good size and looks like he could be a good player.

Mundy was the best of last years draftees (see above)

Dunn was solid and looks like he'll be up to AFL standard this year if required.

I agree with most of what has already been written by Kenny and FD, so don't really have too much to add.

Edgecumbe was very impressive on a wing, although I struggled to see who his direct opponent was for most of the game. I think it was Reilly for the majority of the time, although they were playing loose of each other, and Reilly had quite a significant impact on the game as well.

Browne was very good early and wasn't afraid to get in-and-under the packs although his influence seemed to fade after he copped a solid bump in the second (?) quarter.

Schammer was clearly our best midfielder and I thought Haddrill was close to BOG before he left the ground with an injury in the third quarter. He gave Perrie no room to work with and I can't seem to recall an incident where he was beaten in a marking contest. Does anyone know how serious his injury is?

Gilmore and Mundy showed class and poise in defence and could be a chance to debut later in the season.

Yahoo what a win. I have posted my thoughts (mistakenly) on the Adelaide board. To summarise, the boys put pressure on all over the ground for 4 quarters and not one player of ours (I was terribly confused as I left my printout in Meeks :( ) was exposed as wanting during the match. They looked as thought they had been playing together 12 months which is a real big tick for CC and the coaching staff.

Good job well done.

P.S. Is surely must be time to assume that we are the only team in the comp who could possibly make the GF and take it up to the lions? ;)

P.S.S. Just in case you missed the first one.

;)

Dasler, have you been watching the other games to see how other draft picks have been going?

I know you were pretty critical of Freo not taking more WAer's (and more South Freo players). For example we took Mundy instead of Moody.

The most impressive thing about Mundy and Dunn is that they fit in to the team structure so well. Mundy could well be our best pick out of the draft. Cool as and a great kick and spoil. Dunn is just the inside midfielder we need.

I was also happy with what I saw of Murphy. The kid played all over the place in the TAC Cup so isn't a true defender yet. Played from behind on Carey and if there's one thing Carey has still got it's bulk. You might be able to use your athleticism from behind in the under 18's Ryan but need to play in front in the AFL. Good physical specimen though. Good leap, pace and balance. He could develop into a really good player and a year in the WAFL will help.

Medders is set for an awesome year. My girlfriend is a Hawks supporter and she was saying that the physical presence of Medders on the lead yesterday was Dustall-like (her words not mine). Too strong for a small defender and too explosive for a big defender. Just a solid ball of muscle and explosive!! His goal beating three yesterday was magic.

Schammer is significantly beefer (especially in the legs) and will take on more of the grunt work inside for sure this year.

And Rodger Hayden... all class.

Loved Polaks Goal at the city end from about fifty on a tight angle.

Got there late and missed the richie cunningham show in the first quater.

Hayden is just awesome.

Umpires as usuall don't reward freo marks.

Polak didn't kick any goals as far as I can remember. Maybe you mean TLo.

On Polak, he still looks lost in the forward line and still looks a bit skinny for the position.

Unfortunately I agree.

Also his kicking technique needs some serious adjustment. Twice I saw him take marks just outside 50 (and in a place you' be wanting your CHF taking a shot at goals) and hand passing off a quick as he could. He had no faith in his set shot over distance.

After the half he took two practice shots for goal and each kick appeared to have a different follow through. Its obvious he's working on it but It'll be a few years before Graham has a consistent set shot IMO.

Always watching mate. Everyone seems to be happy with how things have worked out for their respective teams. Thought Freo had an opportunity to take some locally grown talent in the draft....they saw to that in the PSD and rookie draft.

Wasn't a criticism of you dasler and its way too early to tell anyway but Mundy in particular did impress.

None taken. Mundy and Dunn are very, very good players.

Not alot I can add.

Peake was hardly on the ground.

Did you see the amount of security guards on the oval to stop "upset" fans rushing their players.

Loved to see some kids having a kick on the oval after the game.

I like Polak but he seemed to lack confidence with his kicking, solution, play him 100% of the time in the practice games and try to get rid of the yips.

We have some McManus hair clones.

You talking about Fozzie Bear (quote Mission Man!)?

I found myself a couple of times yelling, "Go Fozzie"!!

Especially with his effort in the last quarter where he just didn't give up, won the ball and it resulted in a goal. Was great to see T-Lo and Medders run over to tell him "well done" with very manly hugs and pats on the bum!!

Sure young Fozzie was beaten by Carey in the first half (by all accounts - I only saw the last 5 minutes of the second quarter), but I though he was great in the second half. I think as the next few years unfold I, for one, will enjoy yelling "Fozzzzzzzzieeeee" at young Mr Murphy. Both he and Mundy surprised me with their poise and skill.
