With our twos no chance to make the finals, our bup players are going to find themselves very short of match conditioning come finals time. The Cats look as though they will be in the same position so why not try and organize a couple of practice matches against them?

I think this idea (or something like it) might have been floated last year as well but nothing came of it. Are there AFL or AFLPA rules that prevent it happening?

Re: Practice Matches v's Geelong?

Sorry, what is a bup player?

If it's possible it is a good idea, but, knowing that we have the best depth out there and the best sport science department who are able to keep our depth fit throughout this time, would we want their depth gaining the same experience and/or match fitness as ours? Not sure.

Would be good if we could have practice matches against a team's VFL team not in the finals, possibly for money incentives or the like? Don't know...

Likely a back up player I thought.

Doubt it would ever happen, though good idea in theory.

Injury risk would be too high and physically softening each other up would be too high a risk probably

Re: Practice Matches v's Geelong?

I wouldn't go there.. If one of our key players got injured in this match then we could be screwed. If you are reffering to back up players, however, this could happen, though we could just put them in the VFL and organise a match if our VFL side isn't playing finals against another side that isn't playing. Our VFL side also has the bye in their final round, so by then the boys wouldn't have played for 2 weeks, well some of them anyway.

Would it be Legal to do it?

Re: Practice Matches v's Geelong?

First spot on the ladder (presuming the higher placed team wins every final) ends up playing third spot on the ladder in a prelim final. Second spot on the ladder plays fourth spot in a prelim final.

Given that there's a pretty solid chance that Hawthorn could finish third and West Coast could finish fourth, I'd much rather play Hawthorn in the QF and West Coast in the Prelim, leaving Geelong and Hawthorn to slog it out in one of their infamous battles, and to play the survivor the following week.

That said, unless we drop another game between now and the end of the year, even losing to Geelong in that game by 200 points likely wouldn't give them the percentage to overtake us.

Of course, somehow Carlton will interfere with all of this.

Yep, "back-up". Apologies for the abbreviation and, yes, I was not suggesting that any of our 1st-team regulars would play in these scratch matches.
