Fact PREMIERSHIPS at a DIFFERENT CLUB

A lot of players make the excuse that they left a club to play in a premiership or play in finals. In an attempt to bust the myth, here's a list of players since 1980 that left a club one year to play in another clubs' premiership side. Note that this table only takes into account players who left a VFL/AFL club rather than a SANFL/WAFL/interstate club in the pre-draft days.

Note that a number of players on this list either played for clubs before the club they left, or played for clubs after they left their premiership team without success. 3 players on this list (Thiessen, Mahoney, Dew) all didn't appear in the AFL between the time they left their club and the time they appeared in their premiership team. There are also a couple of players (e.g. Andrew McLeod) who were listed by clubs without playing a game before heading to another club for a premiership.

To me, this proves that most of the time, leaving a club for another does not guarantee any premiership, and if a premiership is eventually won it comes well after they transfer except in a few cases. It also shows that building a team from the draft is probably the better way to making a flag contender.

pretty good list so far.
thought i would do some research on this from 1898-1910 but I don't know how to do the box list so you can add these if you want.

Jack Deas - maybe the first player to do so. In 1897 played only 2 games for south melbourne, then didn't play a game in 1898, moved to Fitzroy and was in the 1899 premiership team.

Eddie Drohan - Played in both the 1898 and 1899 Fitzroy premierships and moved to Collingwood in 1903 and they won the premiership that year.

Corrie Gardner - Played 12 games for Essendon in 1898, didn't play in 1899, then moved to Melbourne in 1900 and won the premiership.

Harry Parkin - Played 2 games for Geelong in 1899 then moved to Melbourne and won the 1900 premiership.

Jack Purse - Played 1 game for st. kilda in 1898-1899 then moved to Melbourne and won the 1900 premiership.

Jack Incoll - Played 4 games for South Melbournein 1899 then moved to Collingwood and won the premierhsip in 1902 and 1903.

George & Teddy Lockwood - both twins moved from Geelong in 1902 and won both 1902-1903 premierships

Jack McDonough - Moved from South in 1904 and won back to back premierships for Fitzroy (1904-05)
