Hird is not soft. His attack on the football is as good as anyone in the comp.
They way you beat him is you keep the ball about 50m from him.

You need someone who is strong, fit and smart. Someone can who read the play.

I know Ive said it before but I think Hilton would be a perfect option. Someone who is yerning to be recognised as a key player
in the line up.
And just quitely I think he would do alright.

And just on more thing. HIRD IS NOT SOFT.

OPEN: Assign Hird a schmuck. Take up a collection to pay any penalties or fines. The very moment Hird scores two times (any combination of Goal or Behind) the schmuck buries his elbow deep into Hirds teeth or throat. This takes Jimbo out of the game, and he won't be scoring a third time. If our boy gets booted, no big deal. Afterall we picked him to be a schmuck to begin with. We'll even pay his fines. Now, the important question...who should be our schmuck?

Peace, Go Tiges!

Mooster,

I'm not sure if you realise how close you are to describing a typical Essendon tactic (OK, it is a Sheedy tactic and he did learn it at Richmond)

Sheedy has always had his pet thug on the list. He was disappointed when he lost Roger Merrett to Brisbane but managed to keep Dean Wallis on his list for well over a decade. Take a look at the '93 Grand Final to see what I mean. Wallis cleaned up Mil Hanna and Stephen Silvagni in that game - the only one Wallis was selected for that year!

Ironically enough, once he got into his 30's and in his twilight years as a footballer, it was accidentally discovered that he also had reasonable ability. This was a complete shock to almost everybody.

Of the current Essendon list, look at Mark Johnson or Paul Barnard to be the designated thug.

Of the Richmond list, which since the retirement of Scott Turner has been short on thugs, look at Ty Zantuck to be the one doing the cleaning up.

We also hold big hopes on a kid called Mark Coughlan who should break into the senior team this year. Both he and Zantuck are both about 188cm and 90+ kgs. Big units for midfielders.

I go to US NFL games, but I find I can watch those more closely on TV. I can tape them and review them over and over. Seeing the game live at the stadium is great, but not great for studying what is actually happening. Sometimes you miss a lot of small "cause and effect" seeing it live at the MCG for instance.

This Fox Footy thing is a beauty Mooster!

I too am excruciatingly analytical about my football - actually most sports - but always prefer being there at the ground to take it all in!

The joy about playing at the 'G is that I can leave the ground, walk 5 mins onto a train and be home in an hours time....

... just in time to watch the replay on Fox Footy where I can analyse to my hearts content!

I actually posted this last night on this thread I'm sure (unless I'm losing the plot)....why not give Fiora a crack at Hird first. He will be able to match it with him for pace and Fiora is pretty strong overhead. If that doesn't work then Hall or Zantuck or Bowden.

On a sidenote

I have had a few of my posts go missing lately and also a thread that I started on the American Sports board about Wayne Carey possibly playing for the Dallas Cowboys went missing. Anyone else experiencing the same?

Correct OMH! Last Thursday we apparently lost 2 - 3 days worth of posts - BigFooty Glitch I guess!

As for Fiora, the only misgiving I have here is the size difference. Although Hird looks like a skinny little twat, I am sure if you stood him alongside Fiora you would see that he is probably 10kgs heavier, all of which exists across his shoulders and chest!

Fiora may well be a reasonable choice but I fear he would be too easily pushed aside.

Then again...

... as mentioned before, Hird does not pay respect to his opponent and being matched with a lighter opponent may catch him off guard!

...

Actually thinking about it more, I think you may be on to something! Being lighter hasn't held Gaspar back any in becoming the best defender in the comp. One thing we do know about Fiora is that he has ability by the truckload and may well do Hird in!

I am prepared to back your call!
