I'm not normally one to play PC games, but after seeing this one given a 1 hour Quick Look on GiantBomb I had to give it a go.
Currently on Steam in a pre-order and you get the beta deal, for $30 you get this awesome Prison creating simulator. Basically, this is Sim City (a good version!) for Prisons.

I've put in about 3 hours so far and while the game is clearly still a while off and has some flaws here and there. There is a TON to like about what's going on.
The game starts you off with a tutorial that gives you a story about one of the prisoners that has been sent to death row to be executed (which you learn the mechanics by building an execution room then executing said prisoner). You learn how this prisoner came to be in the position he is and how you're meant to disconnect from feeling anything for him.
Then you get onto the real game where you have to build your own prison from scratch via government grants for money (where by you have to complete certain objectives - build a yard, build a shower, etc.).
Everything tends to go well...until you get the prisoners. That's when shit starts to just go crazy. I think though it's one of the balancing issues that is in the game right now, shit just tends to go off regardless of what you're really doing.
For example, after I had an absolute shitstorm of a playthrough ending up with about $4 at the end of every day, several dead prisoners, a dead guard, broken doors, broken beds, toilets, etc. etc. etc. I managed to retcon to a previous save and seemingly saved my game. When shit started to go crazy I sent everyone back to their cells and everything was extremely calm, everyone was in bed asleep and my prisoners in the holding cells were fairly calm too.
Come morning, everyone went apeshit and started shanking each other, fighting the guards, breaking beds, toilets, etc. etc. etc. So things can clearly go from 0-100 almost instantly.
While that's obviously something that CAN happen in prison life, it's pretty frustrating to have really done nothing wrong to deserve things to go to shit so quickly. Especially when you may be running low on funds as well and can't afford to repair everything + heal guards + heal prisoners + build more shit for the incoming prisoners!
Never the less, I had an absolute ball playing with it for what I did and will definitely go back. The entry price is definitely a little steep for what isn't a full game yet, but there's a heap to like right now even at this earlyish stage. I can't wait to see what the full release brings as well.
