PS3 One Ups XBOX 360 with Divx Support said:
We all know the Xbox 360 supports DivX nowadays. We told you it was coming and it came. Now the PS3 is supposed to get DivX support, although Sony has better plans for the popular video format.

Last Month, DivX announced that the PS3 will soon support DivX, and, this month,
Gizmodo met with the company, which shared some interesting details on the big move.

First of all, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 is DivX certified. While the Microsoft’s console can only playback some DivX files, the PS3 will get full DivX functionality. This includes the ability for game developers to use the very efficient compression format for in-game cut-scenes.

This means DivX video cut scenes will reduce stress on the machine, theoretically allowing for better load times, less power consumption, and less heat output.

It is unknown exactly when the firmware update will hit the PS3, but it should be "soon."
Sorry XBOX Fanboys.:)

This gives people more reason to get the PS3 now.:thumbsu:

That gives you reason to buy a PS3? Ok
Nah, I already got one.

But the way the 360 fans are going off about having it I can only think it will drive some to buying it.

If Sony aren't careful, people will end up just buying the PS3 as a media/piracy machine.

PSP all over again.

Latest American sales numbers have been released by the way... and things are looking very dismal for Sony.

Not sure why. The PS3 is so obviously the superior machine that it isn't funny.

So?
If you want to play average games with great graphics, then sure buy a PS3.

Myself i bought a Wii because it is awesome fun to play, and a 360 because the games on it kickarse.

The PS3 imo is much more than a console, it is definitely more of a media centre.

Built in internet browser, blu-ray player, USB ports etc. it's a great piece of equipment and really user-friendly.

Interesting that you think it's "dismal" that 4 times as many PS3's sold in the United States in November than they did in October.

What would your definition of "good" be if you think a company increasing it's sales figures by 400% is dismal?

Who gives a shit how it is selling in America, in the worldwide market PS3 sold more consoles than the 360 this week and last week.

The November (Thanksgiving) and December period is naturally the biggest selling month for all consoles in the US.

Regardless of how you spin it, Sony is tracking very poorly this round.

November US sales.

PlayStation 2 496K
PlayStation 3 466K
PSP 567K
Xbox 360 770K
Wii 981K
Nintendo DS 1.53 million

VGchartz is an industry joke, they have been discredited by all and sundry.

Where do they get their figures from considering NPD only reports the US figures once a month?

NPD and Media Create are the only serious source for videogame sales data.

I guess i don't see Resistance, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword as "average games", and this is only it's first year here. In 2008 the PS3 will release some huge titles, and IMO will then have the better list of games. The only 360 exclusive that i'm really excited about is Alan Wake, but apart from that it's basically just all first/third person shooter games.

The 360 has an advantage as it was released much earlier, and also has a huge XBL cult following, but as time goes by more people will realise the PS3 is the far better console. Except for the fanboys who will never be able to admit it and will consider GoW the best game ever until the end of time.

When you consider they'd only sold just over 100k in October, I'd say that increase to 500k is a good result. I don't know how you could spin it to say it was dismal but would be interested to hear your logic if only for a laugh.

It's more than a little strange to even compare the ps3 to the other consoles in that list, when you consider none of them are next-gen consoles anyway.

Exactly, PS3 will hold up alot better in 3-4 years time.

Wow, I'd expect a more reasoned response from the person your username is named after.

You sound completely brainwashed by Sony PR.

I'll let you go pray to your Ken Kutaragi/Kaz Hirai shrine now.

Well, why don't you tell me which of those consoles are next-gen, in your opinion?

the point I'm making is, the PS3 really isn't competing with a DS or PS2, is it? Completely different market.

And I hardly think you're in any position to be commenting on who is being reasoned, when you call a 400% sales increase in one month "dismal" figures for Sony.

Good news. When does the update come out?

Next step would be to get XVID support.

I may be wrong, but I always thought that with DIVX you could play XVID, because on my laptop, I have DIVX but not XVID, and I can play both, I might be well off track though.

The release date hasn't been confirmed, but rumour has it that xmas will be around the spot.

Because Nintendo and Microsoft also doubled their sales from October to November.

So Sony, in relation to their competition, only doubled their sales.

The 360 has been out for a year longer than the PS3, and the fact that it is still outselling the PS3 by 2:1 shows that Sony is seriously struggling to get reasonable marketshare this time around.

Game development costs have skyrocked this generation, and it is for this reason that we are going to see less and less console exclusive titles, especially on PS3 and 360.

Microsoft is very well placed this time around in terms of Next-Gen marketshare. And Nintendo is completely dominating by expanding its audience beyond core gamers.

PS2 was easily the least powerful out of the last-gen consoles, but dominated from the outset by launching first and having a vast quantity of content. Microsoft has usurped that position and Sony is on the nose in its homeland of Japan.

Its so similar to Nintendo in the post-SNES era. After the SNES, Nintendo looked unstoppable, but lost ground by being late to market with less content.

There is no need to spin for any company, they already pay people to do that for them. Lets just try and keep a little truth to these discussions and avoid the SNES vs Megadrive crap that we spouted in our school days.

Blast processing....

It's unfair to compare the ps3 to the Wii (a toy) or the 360 (a previous gen budget console) but even still, it had double the growth of both consoles, with the bottom line being a 400% sales increase.

And that's dismal? Are you sure you meant to use the word dismal? Or do you just not fully understand what it means?

Not really, the 360 sales weren't flash in the first year either, didn't really pick up until Gears came out. once Sony's first round of "killer apps" come out I imagine the sales will increase similarly to the way 360's has when it released it's big games.

Neither the 360 or Wii are next-gen machines though. The Wii is awesome for what it is, "two gamecube's stuck together". the 360 is a nasty little ploy by Microsoft to try and delay high definition market penetration while they get their movie download service up and running.

Look where Microsoft's sales are: the exact same places that voted for George Bush

To imply that Microsoft has used the 360 as some sort of trojan horse to manipulate the HD market is ridiculous unless you acknowledge that Sony is doing the exact same thing with the PS3 as a tool to increase Blu Ray penetration.

The George Bush voter comment is nothing more than fanboy gibberish which weakens your argument entirely. You seem to think that PS3 ownership gives you some sort of elitist cred.

Here is a tip for you... it doesn't.

Like the 360 and Wii, the PS3 is a toy, nothing more, albeit a substantially more expensive one.

then why the use of the word "dismal" ?

Because for the previous market leader to be in this position, it IS dismal.

Sony's price drop (40gb model) came into effect in November and they still sold half the units of Wii and 360.

Mate, I couldn't care less about who wins, I will own all 3 consoles eventually, but just accept that Sony are getting spanked at the moment.

The way people cheer for these multi-billion dollar corporations like football teams is really quite amazing.

The position they're in wasn't what you were talking about. (and btw, it's hardly unexpected that the ps3 has less consoles out there considering it's been released well over a year after the 360)

You were talking about "the latest sales figures" - of which no sane man could claim Sony's result was "dismal".

Hey, I already own a 360 and a ps3 - I'm not cheering for anyone, I'm just voicing my well-informed opinion that the ps3 is a much better console.

I took exception to you claiming Sony's sales figures are dismal when you're only looking at the US figures AND claiming a 400% sales increase is 'dismal'.

And for the record, the ps3 was never going to compete with the Wii, they're completely different consoles aimed at completely different markets.

I definitely acknowledge Sony are doing the same thing, the difference is - Sony's method isn't hurting the gaming industry or resulting in us receiving poorer quality games designed for obsolete technology. the 360's little trojan horse is doing that.

The George Bush voter comment is nothing more than fanboy gibberish which weakens your argument entirely. You seem to think that PS3 ownership gives you some sort of elitist cred.

It's actually factually correct - the 360 sells like crap everywhere apart from Australia and the US. I also notice most of the pro-360 types on here are from Queensland and Western Australia, the areas most agree resemble the bible Belt of the US a fair bit.

Here is a tip for you... it doesn't.

Brilliant.

Incorrect, the ps3 is an appliance.
