Reading some of the pommies cricket boards I realised that they don't rate him at all ....which is surprising as he is argueably the best bat in our team. I think he will top the batting averages this series....hopefully Glenny McGrath can get up there again...what was he in India? 4th or 5th highest batting average?

There was another clown on there that spelt out all the Aussie batsmens weaknesses which included bowling short outside off stump to Gilly! .....I told him to pass these on to the Poms as I would love them to bowl there to gilly - who is one of the best cutters and pullers going around.

I reckon it's probably because people over here haven't seen a lot of him.Most of the other batsmen have played county cricket as well as coming over on Ashes tours.I suppose as well he hasn't scored as heavily against us as someone like Slater whose best days are probably behind him (still scares the bejesus out of me though).
As for bowling short & wide to Gilly...hmmm......maybe he meant so short & wide that he can't actually reach the ball otherwise he's taliking out of his arse.I would have thought the best bet is to bowl round the wicket to him & try & tie him down but I presume that's already been tried.Has he got a weakness against spin?as his scores in India seemed pretty bad.

I'd like to check out these boards Arnold, sounds like a good chuckle. where are they? The poms I play with whose knowledge I respect (as they have some idea about the game) all rate Ponting v highly. If those dorks dont think he can bat, refer them to he scorecard at Headingly in 97.

I think Pontings poor India tour will fire him up a little!

I s'pose we will all find out in a couple of weeks whose got it and who ain't.

The board was NotOut.net. There are a lot of really good comments on there but this guy got really upset that I thought he was incorrect. There's a lot of racist "debate" drivel on there too so try and steer clear of that....they've got problems over there.

Not sure about any weakness against spin, but he definitely likes the ball hitting the bat hard, and uses the bowlers' pace well when batting.

His poor series in India might have just been a bad trot - even Gilly is entitled to one of those!

I really have had it with the board though. Full of ****y Poms that come onto the site that bag Australia, call us "convicts" ..even though they can't seem to work out that the convicts were the poms, not Australians. And say how there going to smash us 5-0 and so forth...The funny thing is, that after the first one-dayer againist England, you didn't hear a peep out of them!! Bandwagons!!

Hmmm........It's always a good idea to keep a sense of reality when you support the English cricket team.

On that note my prediction is that Atherton will score a run a ball century & hit McGrath out of the attack by smashing him back over his head for 3 cosecutive sixes, Stewart will learn to pick Warne's flipper & instead of getting bowled/lbw to it every time will run down the pitch & dispatch it over mid on, Croft will turn every ball square & run through the Aussie batting line up in all the Tests, Tufnell will be recalled & field at point where he will take a number of 'impossible' catches as well as running out at least 5 Aussie batsmen with direct hits & Cad**** will not be intimidated or lose his rag when he gets sledged instead he will laugh it off & bowl all the better because of it...............oh & Cork will actually swing the ball (err... I think I'm pushing it a bit too far with that one)

Punter is a dead set gun. he is still only 26 yo, a couple of years away from his peak. He will be right up near the top all time run scorers by the time he is finished. He strugles a bit against quality spin bowling but I feel he will sort that out before to long.
