Obviously a key to being profitable is keeping records, and using the data to try and fix any leaks.

Does anyone use/recommend any spreadsheets to keep track of all of their punting activity, sports and racing?

I use a spreadsheet to record all my bets. I use Excel 07 as this allows me to run filters so I can identify what I'm winning and losing on and with whom.

I also use Excel.

It is pretty straightforward really.

I have columns with (from memory, as I am on holiday): Date / Sport / Sporting Event / Odds / Amount Bet / Win-Loss $ Margin / Win-Loss % Margin (basically same as odds column, in a different format) / Cumulative Totals (how I am progressing overall).

I also have other columns by formula that works out if an event is a win or a loss, that also then adds up cumulatively, so I can see my overall record (I think at the moment it is a 79% winning record).

I also work out an average of the odds that I bet. I mainly bet short odds, and only bet lines infrequently, and stick to favorites, I think my average odd bet is something like $1.34)

Excel for me, like all of my horse racing stuff.

I have a POT% in mine and because I only bet on horses I know where I'm going wrong ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to creating spreadsheets, is there any that are freely avaiable on the net. I've found a couple via Google, but not too happy with them.

And dr nick, when you say oaksnaf you're referring to the poster?

1:

Is to keep track of all results for my top 4 selections in a race. All bets from top selection results to quinella to F4 are kept track of in this fashion:

Code:
Date	Track	Race	Selection	Result	Race	W/Odds	P/Odds	W/Return	Wins	P/Return	Place
1/01/2010	W'Bool	1	1	Unplaced	1	$9.90	$2.80
1/01/2010	W'Bool	2	3	4th	1	$14.00	$2.80
1/01/2010	W'Bool	3	3	1st	1	$3.90	$1.30	$3.90	$1.00	$1.30	$1.00
1/01/2010	W'Bool	4	2	1st	1	$1.20	$1.04	$1.20	$1.00	$1.04	$1.00

The "1s" are there so I can SUM-ALL. so 1 for a race. 1 for a win. 1 for a place. And just SUM ALL them into different cells so they count for you. And then you can create some IF calculations to show your odds range.

Code:
Date	Track	Race	Result	Return	1st	2nd	3rd	4th
1/01/2010	W'Bool	1	LOSS	$0	X	2nd	4th	X
1/01/2010	W'Bool	2	LOSS	$0	2nd	X	X	1st
1/01/2010	W'Bool	3	LOSS	$0	1st	3rd	2nd	X
1/01/2010	W'Bool	4	LOSS	$0	1st	2nd	X	4th
1/01/2010	W'Bool	5	LOSS	$0	X	X	3rd	2nd
1/01/2010	W'Bool	6	WIN	$277.10	4th	3rd	1st	2nd
1/01/2010	W'Bool	7	WIN	$363.60	4th	3rd	2nd	1st
1/01/2010	W'Bool	8	LOSS	$0	1st	3rd	2nd	X
1/01/2010	W'Bool	9	LOSS	$0	2nd	1st	3rd	X
1/01/2010	W'Bool	10	LOSS	$0	1st	X	2nd	4th

1st = top selection
2nd=2nd selection etc

Is to keep track of my market results. To understand how accurate I am at assessing the greyhounds chances at winning. And then to see how often I can get OVERS betting at the TAB.

Code:
Date	Track	Race	Grade	Dist	Number	My Odds	My Order	TAB Odds	Result	$$	IN	OVERS
1/01/2010	W'Bool	4	Special	650	2	1.66	1	1.2	1	60.24096386	72.28915663	0
1/01/2010	W'Bool	8	G4/5	450	5	1.87	1	2.7	1	53.47593583	144.3850267	1
2/01/2010	Meadows	6	Mixed3/4	525	1	1.92	1	1.3	1	52.08333333	67.70833333	0
3/02/2010	Sale	4	Special	650	7	2.06	1	1.5	2	48.54368932	0	0
5/02/2010	Horsham	6	G5	480	6	2.26	1	2.3	1	44.24778761	101.7699115	1
4/02/2010	Shep	6	FFA	390	3	2.4	1	2.3	1	41.66666667	95.83333333	0

Keep track of betfair and whether you can/have actually placed a bet on your OVERS in their market and how much money is likely to be matched.

Code:
Date	Track	Race	Number	My Odds	Betfair H	Betfair L	Most Matched	Volume	Diff H	Diff L	Diff Main	Back/Lay	Back/Lay	Back/Lay	Result
18/08/2009	Horsham	1	1	12	5.5	4	4	157	-6.5	-8	-8	LAY	LAY	LAY	LOSS
18/08/2009	Horsham	1	2	15	0	0	0	0	-15	-15	-15	LAY	LAY	LAY	LOSS
18/08/2009	Horsham	1	3	4.5	4.9	2.88	4	115	0.4	-1.62	-0.5	BACK	LAY	LAY	WON

Basically the more time you are spending punting. The more time you should be analysing how you are going. But make sure that you have large samples. IE: 200+ bets at minimum to find some trends.

Because if you start with 1500 races worth of data. By the time you've broken it down to:

Tracks: Sale.
Grade: Grade 5.

You might only have 100 races of that type. And even then its a small sample to use.

If I didn't keep track of results. I would be using my memory. And we all know how bad our own memory is!

So I was a little bored this afternoon and thought I might do some updating to my excel stats file.
Í added in each tracks starts, wins, return, win%, Profit/Loss

I'll add the stats for my top raters on my site http://aussieratings.com/ for since I've been back.

I use Access. Much easier to create custom queries for deep analysis.

People only use Excel because it's easy. Once you get your head around Access, you'll never look back.

So I've added to mine the calss of the race to find out what races I should just forget about and also the proformace of each state to go with the proformace of each track.

eg. My ratings have had 48 top raters run at Moonee Valley Night meetings for 8 wins, and a return of $322.00 for a $10 outlay, thats by far the worst of the lot, a loss of $158.00 so I sack the valley.

Group 3 races (so far) have had 8 top raters for 4 wins and a return of $150 or a profit of $70 from a $10 outlay. so I would be silly not to bet in the group 3 races at the moment. Maidens because the form is newish and coming from everywhere shows a huge loss so my ratings are useless in those races.

The biggest let downs are happening in NSW, NSW Metro have the worst return while NSW Country the second worst, SA Metro has the best.

All pretty simple once you can work out how to get the data from your results.

You will always have an area of loss and an area of profit when your going through your analysis. I don't believe that the answer is to simply cut out all the races from that area of loss. Unless you have enough evidence to support that action.

Horsham 2010

26 TOP RATERS
13 WINNERS
$50.30 return S-TAB. Highest dividend $7.90.

Compare that to Shepparton which is dismall.
20 TOP RATERS
3 WINNERS
$6.40 return S-TAB.

Yet punting on exotics at Shepparton has landed some decent returns.

Your definately right though THE_FRESH. Going back through your analysis can give you a better idea on how to PUNT the selections.
