Pyke returning to Perth
11:39:10 AM Fri 29 September, 2006
afc.com.au

Don Pyke, an assistant coach for the past two seasons, has decided not to extend his contract with the Adelaide Football Club.

He will return to Perth later this year to pursue business and other interests.

Pyke, a dual premiership player at West Coast in 1992 and 1994, joined the Adelaide coaching panel at the end of 2004.

“It is a tough decision to leave the football club because I have loved my time here and have really enjoyed working with Neil, the other coaches and the playing group,” Pyke said.

“The club has re-established itself as one of the leaders in the AFL and I’m sure will continue this progress in years to come.

“I have a great passion and love for the game and would like to maintain some involvement into the future, though at this stage not on a full-time basis.”

Adelaide chief executive officer Steven Trigg said Pyke would be missed at West Lakes.

“It is disappointing to lose Don, he has made a great contribution over the past two years,” Trigg said. “Importantly with the start-up coaching group, he has fitted in exceptionally well and he will leave some big shoes to fill.”

The two other assistant coaches, Paul Hamilton and David Noble, have committed to the club for 2007.

That can't be right. KG said he would stay. I always trust KG especially when he has no evidence to back him up - so the club must be lying.

Do you call this a backward or reverse Pyke?

I know his seat isn’t even cold yet but who would be a good replacement for Don Pike?

His primary reasonability was in charge of the midfield, so maybe it’s time we tried to lure Mark Bickley back as an assistant.

Darren Cresswell has a very good coaching reputation but also has been know to be a bit of a cancer. He is looking at moving his family back to Victorian so I guess that he would only consider Victorian club so I guess that would count Adelaide out.

Tony Elshaug (long time assistant to Pagan at North and Carlton) maybe someone to consider.

For some reason, I don't really care. I am sure there is a suitable replacement somewhere.

Good luck to Don. :thumbsu:

What's Roy Laird's background? I don't know much about the guy, but he certainly seems to be a quality coach.

What about Andrew Newton Jarman?

From left field and a good mate of NC, Michael Nunan (That would certainly help Reilly, Mattner, Thompson and a few of the younger boys in the midfield)

wash your mouth out......

and C98 - Mark Bickley is hellbent on world domination and would view an assistant coaching role as an unwanted distraction.

Craigy will pull someone from left field....

as GoSarge said.......Eyes not dat fussed

This had been rumoured/known for a few weeks. He was asked this on Perth radio and basically said ''starting at 7am and finishing after 9pm most days was hard '' ..he did also offer he enjoyed the challenge.

Thanks for your help Don

Oh and Jumbo if TMac turns up at West Lakes I will scream

This is a bit of a loss IMHO but I would like to thank Pykie on his efforts and great wor he has done in the 2 years he has been here. A very intelligent man and I wish him all the best in the future what ever he decides to do.

I wonder who would replace him as the midfield coach? As Mad Dog said, Jonas is contracted to Sydney so he is out of the question. I wouldn't mind seeing Andrew Jarman get the go here. He is a great teacher and the young midfielders would benefit greatly from his experience and knowledge.

Interesting times ahead.

As for Cresswell, I say pass :thumbsd:

KG and the Crows what would he know if it was his beloved power then you could take his word as gospel

Problem with Jarman is you could never really truly trust him to not try and scheme a way to boot your head coach out.

Only if he had the other 2 clowns Mac and Mac to help him

It's a pity to lose Pike, but that's footy.

Craig was good enough to get 3 new assistant coaches together. I have no doubt he can manage another one. :thumbsu:

Hopefully somebody who also has great match-day skills. :)

Geoff Morris anyone?

Family friend who recently vacated Port coaching role.

Instrumental in helping young midfielders - something we could certainly use and if I'm not mistaken the midfield was Pykes role.

Good job from Don though, from all reports he was extremely hard working.

Well done Don and you're welcome back anytime:thumbsu:
I also vote for Jars:) and he's no slouch on match day either.
