The head of the FIFA inspection team says Qatar "faces logistical problems" in attempting to host the 2022 World Cup, raising doubts about its proposal for a tournament where stadiums are located close to one another.

Chile Football Federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls didn't specify what problems he feared but said a World Cup these days would have to accommodate hundreds of thousands of people. He said Qatar does not currently have the necessary accommodations and transport links to meet those demands.

Qatar's bid was a joke from the outset anyway. Anyone who's been there or even lived there, knows it's an absolute farce to have a world cup in Qatar. That mixed with the fact that Qatar hasn't even qualified for a Football World Cup ever, always meant adios to them. They also lack any tourist venues for visitors which is part of what I think Harold Mayne-Nicholls meant when he said they would have logistical issues. Also Qatar might claim 1.6 million people but it's only around a quarter of them who are actual citizens of Qatar. The rest just merely work there. It was a farce from the start but hey it gave Qatar some advertising that's for sure.

There is 12 stadiums,details were released yesterday.
A total capacity of 605,000 for a country that only has 200,000 Qatari's according to the United Nations.The other 87% of the population are migrant workers with zero chance of being nationalised
This is totally unsustainable.

FIFA have been biding their time and regardless of a brilliant presentation to exco from the Doha bid,this is their first official indication that the bid is doomed.
The official line would have come out earlier but for a deal between Blatter and Bin Hamman which will see him look the other way in return for an uncontested further term next year
Hopefully the situation is sorted properly at the end of October,although I'm not holding my breath.

Exco will never devalue the FIFA World Cup by having it hosted in a single city that tourists can see in depth in a half day tour.They certainly won't change the central plank of their statutes to pacify the Qatari's either.But on the flip side they have given Qatar a pathway going forward by creating a structure whereby joint bids are legal.This was only ratified on June 7 and sees both the Iberian bid and the Bennelux joint bids now legal

Qatar though,will know that they would always be a junior partner in a Qatar(1 city)/UAE(9 cities) or Qatar/UAE/Bahrain co bid

Monaco,Hong Kong,Lichtenstein couldn't host by themselves,neither could Melbourne or New York.The only place on earth that might be able to do it is London.

Doha is the 148th biggest country in the world at 1.6 million ,but 179th if you only count locals
They call it a compact world cup where you can go to 3 matches a day----except thats 3 times more that FIFA allow.
Doha have already said they will bring in 100,000 people to make sure that stadiums are full
And of course it averages 53 degrees in June,July and August

Qatars bid was basically killed last week.
Its been a long time coming but FIFA were finally in town and had to give them the bad news that logistically its impossible for them.
Then cannot host a FIFA World Cup unless they restrict freedom of movement.32 teams,32 training grounds,31 armies of supporters all within microscopic Doha
They don't have the pedigree of hosting smaller lead up events such as the Olympics,they don't have any fan culture,they will broadcast to 93% of Asia at 3am,they have zero to do outside matches

Besides the fact that the weather is 53 in the shade and that Qatar has a systematic raping program in place in Asia where they nationalise all the best junior talent,Qatar would( in a co hosting with UAE) be very much the junior partner offering as little as 2 stadiums

But the most telling point is that they aren't technically compliant with FIFAs own criteria for hosting and although Bin Hamman has a deal in place with Sepp to overlook this the rest of exco won't buy it or there will be a massive scandal on their hands

Wouldn't quite put it at 50%.

If you go back through my posts (I've been posting on this subject since 2007 or 2008 - before we even officially began to bid).

I rubbished (correctly) those (and there were a surprisingly large number of them) who said we had a chance at winning in 2018. We never had a chance and now we're not even bidding!

Of course 2018 is going to Europe - anyone can see that FIFA would not go 16 years without a World Cup in Europe - nor even one in the Northern Hemisphere! That would be madness.

Even Frank Lowy and his mates kept up this charade (or delusion - depending on who you are) that we were a chance for 2018. If they ever seriously believed that I do worry about their ability to "read the play" of the Bid.

In any case, clearly 2018 was going to Europe - and given that, 2022 was going to North America or Asia.

What is the most lucrative market in North America? Clearly the USA. (Largest economy in World).

What is the most lucrative market in Asia? Clearly China (2nd Largest economy in World).

Which of these countries is bidding for 2022? USA.

I would say the odds are about 83% USA, 17% Australia for 2022. Not only is it not 50:50, the field is stretched in favour of the USA even moreso by China's declared interest (At least by certain officials) of its interest in bidding for the first possible World Cup it can - in 2026.

That is my market of course, but I would be very very surprised if we got the gig. It simply doesn't make sense. Just like it didn't make sense for us to bid for 2018 and for people like Frank Lowy, Kevin Rudd et al to maintain we were a chance at 2018. We never were - and we are only a slim chance for 2022 (But we are still the second favoured).

The Commonwealth games in India have shown just how laughable the idea of a World Cup is in China presently. Let's not forget that China were close to expulsion from FIFA with corruption debacles and government influence on the game. FIFA wouldn't touch a World Cup in China with a bargepole currently, there's just too much risk with politics, too much pollution, too much overcrowding. Australia makes so much more sense - in the same time zone as China/Asia - so FIFA can capitalise on the Asian economy - no problems with pollution/overcrowding/political issues (communism/tibet and taiwan are big problems for the Chinese).

As it sits, World Cup 2022 is 60/40, with Australia being 60. If China had any hope of bidding for a World Cup they would have done for 2022, not 2026. It's too soon for the US which explains why they have resorted to desperation measures recently (the laughable "World Cup for Life" legacy surcharge on all tickets).

I see the US's best bet in waiting until 2038 (after UEFA gets the World Cup in 2026 and 2034).

Absolutely agree on this one- no connection between India and China with this. China may not have been ready to put in a bid for 2022, but the bid for 2026 won't be decided for a few years yet, so by stating their interest now, they can have the FIFA delegates salivating about a WC in massive population centers with stadiums of high capacity.

Don't buy WC 2022 60/40 claim, either- the decision will come down to 24 men, whose minds may be influenced by things none of us are privy to- and there is still almost two months until the day for decision. A hell of a lot can happen in that time.

Of cpourse, we'll see come December.

FIFA will run miles from the prospect of having a World Cup in China where pollution is at choking levels, traffic jams extend for 100 kilometres not to mention the political issues hosting a major event in China entails. Those negatives far outweigh the positive of hosting in a country with a large population. Qatar's biggest problem economically is they just don't have the population to capitalise on all of the extra spending introduced by hosting a World Cup. Then again, it would hardly bankrupt Qatar as a nation - it'd just be a drop in the ocean for them.
