Looking further ahead to assist with the development of footballers in Qld.

What direction do you think the AFL and AFLQ should explore to give our footballers a stronger week in week out competition to get them ready to compete against the stronger states at National Carnivals? And how can we get the message across outside of a forum?
If our State is to get serious about developing our home grown kids, and being competative in the U18 arena, its time our State Administrators look past the rookie box and make some serious development calls with kids already playing the game. If advertising monies can be spent filling the pockets of Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folou........surely theres some left over for entering a mixed age group of 16s, 17s and 18 into an U18 Interstate competitions.

QLD has had successful years in the past, doing less than what they do now. The reality is the talent pool here is going to be spread thin every few years and the groups coming through wont be as talented as other states. They do enough pre season training and rep squad work to get them to a level as high as they can, unfortunately you cant teach natural ability. Taking the whole State group to play a season interstate is only going to dilute local comps, lets be honest only 2 or 3 will get drafted each year at best and the rest will end up playing state league or worse. Nick Reiwoldt, Jamie Charman, Daniel Pratt and Mitch Hahn made it all the way doing less that they are offered these days, purely because they could all play footy at the standard required naturally. Developement is great, but dont think it will make to much difference if we are only developing average players by national standards.

totally agree brisvegas i think there should be more attractions for our home grown boys and that includes interstate boys busting there ass to make that next step in there afl careers as a state, or do we send them to rugby and perhaps aflq may bring them back later as a rookie and get all the benefits that come with it, as for making a stronger 18s and 16s comp do we try to implement a victorian concept like tac cup within the state where there playing in the best available competion, against reigons instead of 3-5 localised clubs whats your thoughts

Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved by doing nothing, the QAFL standard has improved enormously over the last few years and there is more talent than people give Qld credit for. Firstly there has to be changes at the top, people with vision, passion and work ethic have to be appointed. A plan has to be put forward and implemented. The propensity for taking short cuts has to cease as do "selection is subjective", "it's part of the talent cycle" and "body shape" these are all just excuses used to cover up the real lack of vision for this state.

I have been to State and National under 18 champs all over Australia and nothing has changed in over a decade apart from the "Rookie search" one of the short cuts I mentioned.

Surely there has to be some accountablity?

Apparently, the AFLQ think tank got together recently down on the Gold Coast to discuss next years make up of the Qld rep U18 ..........no longer will there be an U18 Stingrays Bushies Raiders Taipans comp, strong rumors are the 2 x Qld academies will run something...........Im tipping NSW academies may also be involved somehow!!

I would preffer to see a make up of a 50 man Qld squad competing in the 9 team SANFL comp for a whole season. Doesnt have to be the state squad but would be pretty close with the better more mature players getting time up in the State League Senior sides. Under agers getting quality games, and the good 18r olds getting constent quality week in week out

I will await the changes with the hope that what is good for the young talent in Qld was the motivation and deck chairs weren't shuffled for the mates.

If the AFLQ was an AFL club it would have a complete review and scrutiny would be on those who have overseen this years debacle. In the media some of these people are held up as experts,ah if only people really knew.

If it was a private business competition would have killed it here years ago...

Apparently some forward thinking is going on according to some chats I had this week.In the end if we get a professional/fair result for the young guys thats all that has ever mattered.

Only time will tell.

Time has told us........18s to play a derby amonst themselves in Brisbane to cut a squad to play the Gold Coast.......Im assuming the Sunny Coast and above kids will come down for the local Brisbane hit out.......assume again Gold Coast will have similar with Nthern boys coming down for there hit out........then the Brisane V Gold Coast hit outs for State selection. Idea being we hear, is that the best rucks will vi for a position and midfielders the same......not sure how they put the best backs on the best backs and the best forwards on the best forwards though. Some good kids will no doupt miss out after a hit out and up against a kid who just may happen to have a good day out on the park. End of the day I suppose you win your position. I still llike the idea having a 10 team SANFL comp exposing the kids to one of the best comps in the country......ah but that would cost about $200K.......and on the lines of thinning out the already 18 comp in brisbane for players its already happening with the better kids not playing much 18s and playing up in seniors. State League clubs dont care about the 18s as much as you would like to think, many do however care about developing the talented youth into the best they can be........its not just about the elite kids its about the ones as well that just miss out, so a bigger academy squad would cater for a team over a whole season getting quality in the State League, National U18s, SANFL and local. Cant see why it wouldnt work and couldnt see the SANFL turning there noses up giving there kids an opportunity as well. All it needs is some vision, a good sponsor etc

Time to raise this question again. There is rumblings in a few State league camps about a different style of an U18 comp......stronger Im mean a seriously talented Qld squad of up to as many players they deam fit to rotate a competative side. They need to seriously look at this for 2012. Forget there new beut selection process for U18 State as they will find there team in this squad......anyone got ideas to suggest a format. My take is join the SANFL U18s or if not then second and maybe better choice affiliates to the new NE conference. Start spending some money and we will produce
