It is looking solid and I dont know what the stats are or if it is my imagination but we dont seem to dominate in the air too much.
Big grabs etc.

Maybe its the same for all teams and in modern day football the aerialist is a rare thing.

Yeah, I don't see many pack grabs any more, just a heap of players flying for it and the ball spills to ground 9 times out of 10.

The forward contested marks seem to be one on ones with subtle nudges, good body use and judgment the most common. Helps if your midfield puts in your favour too. You get the odd pack grab but it seems hard-running/working key forwards with mobility and versatility are the trend.

Only issue with Jack - is he capable of kicking bags of goals?

It's been ages since we've had a FF capable of doing it on a consistent basis. Would love Darling to become that player.

I reckon he'll be a utility used like Goodes and Pav. Not a stay at home fwd but a roaming, running big bloke that pushes up to half forward, through the middle and of course inside 50. I reckon he'll blow up a lot of key defenders at Subi (in time) as his work-rate is amazing and most big guys will struggle to go with him and the smaller will be out-sized and out muscled.

Will take time though obviously, so not expecting the above too soon

Also, not saying he'll be as good as Pav and Goodes (who could know) but he is a tall utility like them imo.

Since when is Kennedy a good contested mark? Can hardly remember the last time I saw him win a one on one, certainly didn't on the weekend against a bloke who hasn't played an AFL level match before. Oh sorry, one where Coad tripped over...

I wouldn't go movin Kennedy too much, because his biggest asset is his workrate which is best served at centre half forward pushing up the wing. Don't go wrecking a spot which is coming along nicely to try and possibly fix another. After yesterdays game I think our no 1 FF is darling. He looks a great prospect up there and has the speed and fitness to push up th field and pinch hit in the middle.

Yeah I don't rate Kennedy much of a mark.
I agree about his work rate being his best asset and think that it has not worked that well when we have played Kennedy deep.

I think we have promising talls, it whether we can get the ball to them this year.

There's a few former premiership players at the club who get slagged on this board. End of the day they have a flag no matter whether you think other players where more talented.

Hypothesis:

Would you rather be a champion player and play 250-300+ games but never get a flag. (Richo, Harvey, Grant, B. Johnson etc...)

or

Be a solid player 100-150 games or so and walk away with ultimate glory.
(Bones, Lynch, Rowan Jones etc...)

or

Fluke a flag and play 50-100 games or so.
(Richard Hadley, Steven Armstrong, Clay Sampson etc...)

Before the big money I would have taken the middle option but now a days those extra 150 games could be lets say 350,000 a year well that could be worth over 2 million smackers.:)

Thats all we need though. No team in the league has 2 A grade KPFs. Brisbane did last year but thats ancient history. Hawks could maybe put claim to it.

I reckon Adelaide could do in the near future. Walker and Tippett have heaps of potential.

Actually if you look at the previous premiership teams KPFs bar Hawks there isnt an A grader amongst them

Hansen/Lynch
Mooney/Ablett
Mooney/Hawkins
Cloke/Dawes

yeah true, Cloke is probably the best of that lot. If his kicking at goal was decent he'd be an AA candidate.

Just to digress one of the key things though is despite not being great, they're all big bodied guys. For all those out there wondering why we got rid of McKinley - despite him being quite talented, unfortunately 6 foot full forward don't win you premierships.... or rarely (Daicos would've been the last)

I rekon Jarman was the last smallish. (maybe taller than he looked )
But not a bad couple of forwards in Jarman and Daicos. Dont come around too often.

yeah Jarman. was thinking of Modra but looking at the games played he didn't play much in 1998 after 90+ goals in 1997.

But as you say, those guys are absolute superstar small key forwards.

Highlighted the talls in a potential future side:

Waters Mackenzie Schofield/Jojo/Brennan/B Wilson
Hurn Brown Smith
Sheppard Shuey Gaff
Hams Kennedy Darling

LeCras Lycett Broome

Naitanui S Selwood Masten

Int from: Strijk Swift Ebert Weedon Stevens Neates

Hopefully EMac, Brown, Kennedy, Darling, Lycett and Naitanui are all decent quality, the signs are pretty good but a lot can happen. Unsure about third tall(ish) defender.

I don't think we should play darling as a FF. Theres too much simple body on body down there and chances are he's always going to get outnumbered. Seems like a bit of a waste of his tank and his ability to chase.

I quite like the idea of just modelling him on pavlich. He's seems pretty versatile and i'm VERY impressed with how much he actually wants the footy. Credit to him. Not to sure about his casualness when he actually has the ball though... is that him just being calm or does he not know what to do with it? Either way, can't wait to see more
