I'm looking at having a week's holiday towards the end of November somewhere in North Qld and were wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to good hotels / resorts etc.

At this stage I am thinking possibly Airlie Beach but pretty much happy to go anywhere on the coast.

If you're single, Airlie kicks arse. Depends what you want to do though. If you want to go berko, get pissed as a plover & bonk a few backpackers, Airlie's your place.

Steer clear of Airlie

Seriously though, it's a nice enough place, but are you beach types or rainforrest types? If you want a nice quiet getaway but still accessible to a bit of nightlife, you'd be better off heading up to Cairns. Quicker run to the reef out of Cairns as well. The islands around Airlie are awesome, but if you want to do any serious rainforrest hiking or tours you'd need to head down to Eungella Nat Park outside Mackay. There is Conway Nat Park just outside Airlie, but it's not the same, and copped a serious hammering during the last cyclone.

I always recommend Cairns but that's because of personal experience.

Plenty of stuff to do/see up there.

- Rainforest tours
- Skyrail
- Kuranda Railway
- Reef cruises
- Trips around the Atherton Tablelands (plenty to see up there too)
- A handful of wildlife parks
- Esplanade area
- Plenty of beaches

Having lived in NQ for 4 years..... I'd second that.

Palm Cove is lovely - only about 1/2 hour from Cairns. There are lovely resorts but also S/C apartments as well. We had a week up there a couple of year ago, highly recommended!
