Hey guys. For those of you who play online shooters on PS3 or X Box 360, how do you aim properly with a little controller? I tried mucking around with an X Box once and found that first person shooters were almost impossible to move the crosshaire fast and accurate. I usually play PC and using a mouse to aim is easier... so how do you do it?

Common complaint from guys that have played heaps of PC shooters, but you get used to it with practice as others have said.

Swings and roundabouts really. Aiming is easier on PC, but i find a controller is so much better for movement and accurate jumping. Once you get the aiming thing down you might find you enjoy it a lot more than PC, i sure did.

If you have issues maybe try fiddling the sensitivity and invert axis features, you might find a better setup for your style

practice, m&k takes no skill

BS. You actually have to hit your targets with a mouse. Besides, you'll find the most skillful gamers are PC gamers in many genres, as the game communities tend to last for years instead of a few months. Try and play counter-strike today and see how you go...

given I only have a track pad on my laptop and no PC, i'd get absolutely destroyed. but for me, I picked up using a mouse and keyboard far easier than a controller.

my one problem with controllers is that depending on your set up, strafe jumping can be difficult or near impossible to do while keeping the enemy in your cross hairs

There are lots of other things too. Rocket-jumping is just about out of the question, as is wall walking in l4d (not too mention needing to press a button to spin around is hardly intuitive) etc.

I agree that it's harder to play with a controller, I was just pointing out that m&k still takes skill, and when everyone is using it, its not like anyone has an advantage over the other.

and LOL at the idea of playing with a trackball. That would be like getting into a fist fight with one arm tied behind your back.

360 controller is great for FPS, I'm hopeless with the dual shock. I don't know if it's down to layout or that I'm just used to the 360 controller.

Though I never liked FPS's on my old PS1.

With M&K I'm a good shot with the mouse but I suck moving around with the keyboard. I can't get a setup I find comfortable.

rocket jumping really depends on the game, if you get damaged by your own rockets it's pretty much out of the question anyway

and i never played l4d :(

It's all relative tho really isn't it? Just because someone is skillful with a keyboard and mouse, it doesn't mean they're the most skillful gamers full stop.

Stick a PC superstar in a game of HALO with a MLG pro like Walshy and they'd get r*ped. It doesn't mean one is more skilled than the other, just both have different skill sets.

It's like putting Warnie up against Jordan in a game of cricket, it wouldn't tell you much about the relative merits of each.

You make good points. Your correct when you say it's a different skill set. I was mainly basing my point on the fact that communities tend to wither away very quickly on console shooters, whilst on pc they stick around for years afterwards, likely due to dedicated servers, mods etc, which is naturally going to mean that a lot of pc shooters are active with very high percentages of gun players.

MLG and Halo games would be the exception they've been using Halo 2 then 3 for competitions since 2002.

Yeah it does happen, but it is rare, and only the biggest games seem to have a chance to stand the test of time, so Halo 2 may still be pretty active, but you can still play quake 3, unreal tournament 1 and even smaller games like Soldier of fortune 2 (from 2001 I believe) on PC. I'd imagine a newbie trying to play halo2 today would get trounced badly, just like I would if I started to play q3.

Eh, I have stuff all motor skills and my right thumb is weak from a footy injury, hence why I'm not a huge fan of controlers.

This has always been the issue with me. Never really felt comfortable enough with the Keyboard.

Have always had a controller in my hands throughout my console years so I've been used to it for a long time now. Even though I've never been a big Shooter game fan until this gen. The only shooter games I can really remember loving and playing tons of previous to the PS3 would be Goldeneye, Black and the original MOH. Can't say there was much else.

But I've generally been good enough at FPS's, never felt like the controller held me back. R:FoM, COD4 and now MW2 I've maintained a fairly good game. COD4 at a 1.00 k/d ratio and MW2 at a 1.01 k/d ratio as well.

I was never a big PC gamer, Quake was the one that I played the most on PC. But just never felt as comfortable playing PC as I have with a controller and consoles.

Why not a mini joystick with buttons for the left hand (movement) and a mouse for the right hand (aim and shoot) that would solve everyones problem.

You still need to reach for keys such as r to reload, f to open door, e to talk, I for inventory, f for flashlight etc. I guess it could work if you have a gaming mouse with enough buttons.

Keyboard and mouse is shit for left handers.

With a controller it's all about thumb movement. With mouse it's about wrist movement and depending on how you use the mouse sometimes arm movement.

So, I hear you say "why not use your left hand for the mouse". Have a look at a default set up for say Team Fortress 2.

WASD is your movement
ctrl is crouch
shift I don't think is mapped in TF2 but I mapped it to some script (either quick melee or perfect rocket jumps)
space to jump
r is reload
e is calling for medic
than you have the number keys for weapons
and y, u for chatting (g and h for voice scripts too which can be important)

Now say I used my right hand for the keys it is unnatural. You have your thumb hitting ctrl, shift. Your ring finger resting on d (right) and moving to e and r.
Your little finger should be around the space bar but it obviously does not sit there as well as your thumb, also it moves along with your ring finger. With a left handed key set up your ring finger hardly moves off A.

I guess I'm just too lazy to get a proper set up going (i.e. have the other side of the keyboard set up, something like O K L ; ) but that feels odd for me because you still have the rest of the keyboard to your right. If I could take off the arrows, home delete, and numpad 3rd of the keyboard, like I know you can with some keyboards I would be set.
