Clinton Benjamin reminds me a lot of Jarrad Oakley-Nichols (Tigers, Pick #8, 2005).

Only Benjamin is faster and slightly taller.

Also, Judging by what I've seen of Oakley Nichols so far - I wouldn't mind betting that Benjamin has better skills also :)

A real steal at 51 IMO, reminds me of Adam Goodes in size and the way he moves, super fast and attacking, similar to our other tall quicks in Bower, O'Hailpin & O'Hailpin, should grow a bit more still and get to about 191cm or so. We are building a good list of Talls that have elite pace and agility which will hold us in good stead for many years to come. Will probably start in the back half and can also play wing and possibly could go into the middle in time. The best value for the pick IMO:thumbsu:

Carlton recruiting staff had him pegged as a top 30 selection.

Steal at #51.

Strangely enough I was more rapt abouth our selection of Anderson than any of our other picks (other than the obvious). He was one of three players in the NT team that actually looked like AFL prospects. A very impressive talent.
He must have real guts to match his skill to win the B&F in the Darwin League.
It's not a overly skilled league up there, but it is fast and hard from what I have been told.

Isnt a natural ball getter...
Doesnt have good disposal..
JON is the more natural footballer... CB is the better athlete..

I agree with you gandaal. I was very impressed with Joe Anderson during the champs, and even mentioned to Gilly more than once that I wouldn't mind drafting him with one of our later picks. Great get at #67 if you ask me.

Good call HBF, he was always "your boy" for #67 IIRC.

Have to admit, that Hughes looks to have done very very well with this selection. I'm just amazed at the wealth of options we have now, in every position. Forward line was already pretty healthy, but we now have a vast array of very talented small, medium and tall midfielders. Even our defense is looking extremely strong, with a lot of competition for KP defensive spots. A massive contrast to the situation a few years back. The big challenge now, is whether our coaching staff can develop this talent, and whether Denis can mould this team into on that can win a string of flags. I think we can. :)

6. Clint Benjamin - Claremont
Versatile utility who can also play as a forward or defender. Good endurance and speed for a 187cm utility. Played predominantly as a key defender at the U18 national championships this year. Only question is disposal, but should be a top 20 selection at least.

I think Hughes has really done some good homework. Can't wait for 2 years time.

You're an Idiot.

so why didn't we take him with our pick 35.

Probably because Austin was predicted to go in the 20's so when he was still available at #35 they obviously couldn't resist.

Can you give some more thoughts/insight into the type of player Benjamin is?

Now an outside reciever, played up forward in his younger days, dominating PSA football. Missed the State 16's carnival through injury, although was still offered a AIS position mainly through his Schoolboys performance, where he was All Australian. Learnt much through the AIS program developing a greater understanding for the game. Through the State 18's was used in a variety of positions adding a full bow of dimensions to his game. Can hold down a position in the backline, whilst its known his run on a wing through the midfield can be damaging. Can have an impact in the forward line where he has been sparsely used in the past two seasons.

Disposal by foot has always been below stardard, and this will have to be corrected by Carlton. His kicking should have been corrected at the AIS, where one of their at home exercises is to be judged on their kicking, where certain guidelines need to be met on their kicking ability. Has worked hard on his non preferred foot and has improved greatly since early on in this school footballing days.

Goal kicking can be dreadful on occasions due to his awkward kicking style, especially with him running around corners to kick whilst on the run.

And isnt unlike many other indigenous players, can take a high grab, although hasnt had the opportunity lately whilst playing the backline.

There was a PSA game a couple of years back where he was rucking, he's grabbed the ball out of the ruck, and just ran... after getting inside 50 and dodging players he's kicked the goal. I do believe he does on occcasions he holds on to the ball for too long when he should have released by hand.

Late last year had bone removed from an ankle, which caused an interuption to his preseason, and this year will be his first actual preseason.

Lightning 100m, 200m and 400m sprinter, huge long and triple jump.
All round athlete

Believe he was a steal at #51, after he had been considered a definate first round pick in the past couple of years

Was suprised Brock O'Brien wasn't taken by the Blues at #51, but was taken with the next pick overall.

Needs to have a couple of strong preseasons where he can bulk up, but I dont believe there's any reason why he couldnt get a game late in 2007
