TL;DR — replace cigarettes with those "illegal" nicotine-based disposable vapes.

------

I've been a heavy-ish smoker since I was about 16. Many moons ago. Have quit many times over the years but it only lasted months before I got back on them. Found with me, my nerves get too high-strung when going thru the process of quitting, wanna kill and snap at people, like you're constantly busting for a piss. And then, when I've managed to quit for that difficult early period of days/weeks, tend to find I replace smoking with over-eating and other such. And times when I'm quitting BOTH smoking and curbing the over-eating, literally almost start to cry every hour as I struggle thru the paining pangs of needing a smoke and needing to over-eat. Found drinking water and exercising a lot didn't help ease thru the quitting of smoking/eating.

Why those nicotine-based vapes work....

Firstly, your mind still needs that habit of putting something to your mouth, of inhaling steam/smoke, especially the routines you've formed over the years — first thing in the morning, while you're having a coffee, after a big meal, while you're out drinking with friends, that 10 min morning break at work, while driving on a long trip, just after sex, sitting on your veranda/patio evening relaxation, etc.

There's about %5 nicotine in them, so it's equivalent to smoking light mg cigarettes, still getting a little nicotine. But it allows your body to ween down from a higher mg count of cigarettes.

There's the fact vapes don't smell, don't stink out your clothes, having to only wear clothes once and having to constantly wash them because nothing worse than when others who don't smoke have to sit/stand near you and you stink of that smell. Now, you can puff all day if need to and you don't stink, have bad breath, or need to immediately basket clothes worn.

If you're not allowed to smoke indoors or in the car, or you live in an apartment complex and legally can be evicted for doing it outdoors....now you can with vapes, they don't smell, don't stain walls.

There's the heavenly convenience of never having to clean out disgusting ashtrays, disgusting collection of stinky butts in bags, ash everywhere in the car etc that needs to be vacuumed. As well as no longer having to carry around lighters and packs of smokes in pockets or handbags, especially if you buy 30s or 40s packs that are huge.

You don't have to worry anymore about street teens and old bums constantly asking for a smoke. All you carry now is a lipstick sized vape.

Before, if you got the urge to smoke, while sitting at the TV or on computer, and had to get up, leave things, to have your smoke outside, come back, and doing that constantly, get up and go back in....now you can stay inside, open a window or not, just puff away while not leaving the TV or computer or gaming console.

There's the plus of not having to constantly wash your hands of the smell, or brush your teeth or gargle mouthwash. Don't have to worry about teeth and fingers staining disgustingly.

Lastly, there's the obvious financial relief. The cost of packs of smokes in Australia are untenable now. 20s around $30, all the way up to $50, and if you're a pack a day person, you're spending $200-$350 a week omfg! And you know you've tried it and it doesn't work for long....where you TRY to cut down smokes per day to like 10 or 5....only a matter of time before stress etc strikes and you're back to 20+ a day.

Those vapes cost $20, gives you 600 puffs before it runs out and you toss it. Initially, as you ween off smokes, go thru 2 or 3 vapes a week.... that's only $60 a week!! Huge saving. Again, you only need to replace the urge for puffing on something with something else that's significantly cheaper and cleaner and not stinky. It's a no-brainer. Why buy a 40 pack of light cigs and puff three or four of them in a row to get a hit, and still cost you $50 a day, when you can vape which is like a light cigarette.

Also, many flavors, fruity, minty, or cinnamon, etc, so it's actually making your breath nice, no constant spitting either.

Really, it's the best invention in recent memory...an all day cigarette that is electronic, use whenever, put back in pocket whenever.

Also, when you light a cigarette you're beholden to have to finish the whole thing, even when you just needed a few quick puffs before going back into work/house/car, you had to waste the rest, butt it out and throw it away, not really tasty when you put out the cinder and keep the remaining half for latter....it tastes and stinks even more. But with vapes, you can take a few quick puffs, put it back in pocket...too easy, too smart.

There's finally the health benefit....so much tar and poison in a cigarette. Always short of breath, lethargic, bad for sex life, normal activities like climbing stairs etc. After only a couple days of vaping only, it's the same as quitting altogether....your body starts spitting out all the phlegm and congestion from your lungs and nostrils. Increased lung capacity so soon, bounding about with energy, up stairs, jogging across a street, perform better sexually, etc.

The idea is....hold onto vapes as a crutch for however long you need, it's making you healthy even while you're dependant on it, body cleaning itself of tar. You're only interested in the small amount of nicotine they contain, you don't need the tar and poisons. And one day, when you're able to get rid of the crutch of vapes, it'll happen naturally over time, because the weening down or off stage is so much easier on your mind and body than doing it with cigs or patches. Patches too don't offer that which vapes do...the habits, needing to put something in and inhale, etc.

And even when you end up weening down off vapes, it's not like you are trying to quit vaping now, going thru withdrawals, feeling ashamed that you broke down and bought another pack of cigs....no, you can buy a vape for $20 weeks after not vaping, and no shame, or can still buy them but gradually reduce how quickly you use them up, instead of 2 or 3 vapes per week, you can go down to maybe one vape every two weeks and live comfortably like that as an occasional puffer of steam/smoke.

Hope this helps those out there wondering how to quit, wanting to quit but unsure of the best method, or even confused if vapes are just as bad for you....theyre not....no tar or poison, it's just steam....an internal battery that lightly heats the flavored oil inside, creating steam (like a kettle does). You can tell.... there's none of that toxic smell and taste and after smell/taste....therefore a vape is "clean energy".

Best thing I ever did was to walk into a vape shop, I walked out a non smoker after over a decade of trying to quit. Prior to that, nothing worked.

Congrats. It's only been a month or so for me, but I am %100 confident and sure i have truly quit forever....i just feel it and know it in my bones that its finally worked due to the reasons why vaping.

If like me, you're probably done with cigarettes for good. There's no real down side to vaping.

One of my brothers spends about $300 a week on cigarettes, I gave him a Vaporesso vape kit for Xmas.

So happy to hear other vape success stories, confirms what i posted. But also grand of you that gift to sibling. I've already done similar to a couple colleagues struggling to quit.

Like you said, theres not only no negative to vaping, its also positive in many ways.

Last time I tried, I lost my temper with someone in the local general store. This person was an entitled arseh*le, right out of line and disrespectful but my reaction was OTT.

All good vaping and I don't always use the nicotine.

Thats the big thing i noticed with me too....never even felt that nervy high-strung ready to snap self. Days went by and i just thought huh that was easy. Also, other big notice, how quickly the lungs start healing and you have energy.

You can't smoke anywhere any more either. For people who smoke heavily, how do they cope if they're suddenly hospitalised or jailed? They could end up in even bigger trouble when they're just having nicotine withdrawal. I didn't realise I even had a problem with them until I lost my temper.

A bonus I hadn't really thought about but which is great, is not having to clean filthy ashtrays. And I don't have to wash my hair every day.

Yea, been meaning to do this for a while. Tried a mates vapor and yes, seemed to legit wok for me.
Id strongly urge you to start immediately. The monetary savings first off. But soon, all the convenience i mentioned in OP and how quickly your health recovers, how quickly you realize youre no longer cigarette addicted without the pangs

I only spend $50 a week on smokes, bought a 25g pouch Saturday and still got some left. So would be purely for my health.

Not according to this.

Though it does say it is very rare, so vaping seems like a lot less riskier and cheaper alternative to smoking.

Well, apart from popcorn lungs.
Compared to what smoking cigarettes does. Anyway, youre only vaping to ween off cig addiction. Soon, you end up not needing vapes at all, or very minimally. Also, youd have to think some or most of the anti-vape rhetoric is because cig manufacturers and the Aussie govt benefiting from millions tax from smokes dont want to lose that money etc.

Overdoing it on anything you might inhale could cause a problem I'd think.

I only smoke after sex, so I'm down to a pack a day.
Doing the math....that means you only last for minimum 5 mins each time

Not a smoker, but have only heard good things about Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

I used his books to stop drinking alcohol and caffeine.
Worked for us
First two weeks was not easy after the last cig tho

Never had another puff again

Great thread. I know nothing about vaping. Hilarious auto correction makes vaping into vainglorious. So appropriate.

Preface my next comment with a very big wink emoji....there's nothing more evangelical than an ex smoker...

Smoked for 25 years. Tried giving up so many times. Once succeeded for 6 months until I foolishly thought one wouldn't hurt......

Vapes weren't around in my time, but I finally kicked it when my first child was born and I couldn't bear the thought of them smelling that insane stench on me.

But by that stage, it was actually realistic that I could succeed as I had already managed to cut down the numbers by identifying the habitual ones, and one by one, cutting each one out. The toughest was the one I would enjoy after dinner.

But I've been ciggy free for 15 years now.

My suggestion is to look at each attempt to quit as a learning experience, and don't beat yourself up if it doesn't work out. You will get better at it until you find the method that works for you.

I remember reading that nicotine was one of the most addictive drugs known so it's ok if youtry, and it doesn't work out, as long as you try again.
