Bloody fantastic

Beyond the obvious choice for favourite in Automatic For The People, I've always been a big fan of Up - singles like "Daysleeper" and "At My Most Beautiful" are still of the same high quality as many of the band's singles were, and deeper cuts like "Walk Unafraid", "Why Not Smile", "Sad Professor", "Hope", "Falls To Climb" were all great as well. New Adventures In Hi-Fi was pretty high-standard as well, and "Leave" is right up there as one of the best songs they ever recorded.

My problem was I only started getting into the band midway through 2011 - I'd listened to most of their singles but not much else by the time they announced they were splitting. Still, lucky I got the chance to experience the "new R.E.M. songs released!" thing, if only once, with the three new tracks on Part Lies... "We All Go Back To Where We Belong" was a great song to end a magnificent run of singles on as well. And with such a large back catalogue, it's easy to find a new track to be interested in every now and again ("Letter Never Sent", "Beat A Drum", "Low Desert", "Exhuming McCarthy", etc.).

Still, my favourite would be this gem from their final album:
