Hot on the heels of the alleged racially motivated slurs on Hawthorn's Lance Franklin at York Park recently during an AFL match and those of dark-skinned Melbourne players at the same venue earlier in the year, there have been other players come forward to talk about their experiences of dealing with the ratbag element amongst our sport.

Disappointing that it's still goes on. Must admit, that's the first time I'd heard about the Hall incident.
I generally didn't think it was all that prevalent at football in Tassie, the issue of racial abuse, in fact I can only recall three instances that I've personally heard in the last 20 or so years.

The worst example of it that I heard was back in about 1991/1992 at North Hobart when North Hobart and North Launceston played there and both were, I think, undefeated.
Both clubs utterly hated each other and it was at the height of the very large feeling of dislike between both sets of supporters, North Launceston had an Aboriginal recruit from Darwin called Brian Stanislaus, and he absolutely cut the Demons to ribbons this particular day and the Robins smashed North Hobart by about 70 points.

Most of the day a very large group of North Hobart supporters standing on the open concourse below the Horrie Gorringe Stand (outside their present clubrooms) had been ripping into Stanislaus calling him "petrol sniffer", "black c*nt", boong", "coon", "spear-chucker", "n*gger", "garn ava shower ya filthy c*nt" etc. Was pretty ripe! :o
There's footage in the ABC archives of Stanislaus taking a couple of bounces and drilling a goal home straight into these taunters behind the goals and preceding to flip the double-handed 'bird' at them and gave them a gobful back in retaliation.

The last incident of that nature that I can recall seeing was at the TCA Ground in around 1999/2000 when a Cygnet Colts player called Hobart Colts player Jason James a 'n*gger' out in the pocket in front of the old scoreboard during a stoppage.
It was clearly audible up that end, everyone stopped in disbelief when they heard it but I don't think anything other than a warning by the volunteer umpire ensued.

Very rarely hear any racial slurs. Anyone that does dish them out is *******.

Think Azza was a little embarrassed by the story in the end. I have played with him a bit and you don't hear much at all, especially from players, you might hear the occassional tool on the sideline though. Did play in a reserves game last year against Launceston and heard one of the Mair boys call someone a ***! Is there a difference? Not saying either is good, but you can'[t have it both wayz.

I know it is still quite prevalent at the footy but almost totally from the sidelines. Have been to a few AFL games in Melbourne in last few years and hear it as just about every game in the crowd, turn around and look at who is saying it and gues what? typical bogun as a rule, brainless waste of oxygen. The other irony is that the people doing it usually have an aboriginal or other person of whatever ethnicity in their team as well but only direct it toward their opponents:confused: I am also sure that secuirty hear it but ultimately are either powerless or too scared to do anything depending on the appearance of the offender, I am led to believe the guy in the buddy incident was rather confronting, hence no action.

I like the idea of the sms for anyone whom is being over the top with abuse directed at anyone however we do sometimes need to take a deep breath. I have witnessed a grown man with his family (cats supporter) outside ETIHAD stadium crying openly like a baby because they were going to miss the first bounce of the ball in the game as the lines were long? sometimes footy supporters change personality just like the old player with white line fever and they do or say things out of character:o like that cheer squad guy from North who love tapped the Port player, he was so embarrassed he left and will now get a 12 mth ban. What he did was silly but hardly worth 12 mths, racial slurs and vile language is much worse yet rarely acted upon, a real shame to be honest.

I remember the Stanislaus incident vividly as I was there that day, the kid could play too and I clapped when he retaliated. I certainly hope Hally isn't too embarrassed, he just told his side of the story, hopefully everybody will know who he was talking about and the next time those guys frequent a Lauderdale game everybody will look at them in a different light? Must admit that ground has its fair share of incidents, must be something with the tip air:)

Was told last night that the (1) guy that said it was sorted out then and there by the people around him and has never been back!

If it happened I hope the offender doesn't come back. Last year mainly I stood in the area described (there is also a bar on that side of the ground) I never heard a comment that could be considered racially offensive (please read this as I'm not suggesting that Hall doesn't believe he heard something). I also have respect for Phil Giffard, if Phil says he never offered an apology I accept he never did and I take it to mean he was't placed in a situtation where he should apologise.

pretty sure aaron said something in the article about a couple of teamates hearing it as well. didn;t abc televise a game from lauderdale last year or was that 09.might be worth them having a look back thru the tapes.

Yeah last year, it was the opening of their newly renovated ground and was telecast by ABC1.
I stood for much of that match on centre wing right beside the ABC van to get a bit of respite from the howling wind down there on that day.
I'm just trying to figure out which part of the ground this incident that happened took place, it's not the bottom corner where the shipping container scoreboard used to be is it?
They used to get a bit silly in that bottom corner whenever I went to watch matches down there years ago, I recall his old man had a problem or five with them down there in a night match back in '99 (they were hideously smashed).
Like I say though, never heard one mention of it until that article came out in the paper, I'll have a look around and see if I've still got the tape, I think I might.
PS: I agree with the sentiments on Phil Giffard - met him a number of times and I have full respect for him.
Why'd he chuck in the presidency anyway? He was a good leader.
