Dear Gill and footy people,

The AFL is desperate to increase scoring in the league, and there's a simple solution that has a precedent from international rules. After the 'supergoal' idea tanked, it's clear that 6 for a goal is set in stone, and the fans want all goals to be considered equal.

But what about behinds? There are three massively different types of behind, and they could score differently, and significantly increase scores in the process. Plus handsome forwards with great hair and a marking technique that can best be described as beautiful deserve more reward for their efforts, and shouldn't be penalised for being post specialists or prone to the very occasional wobbly drop punt. So like in international rules we can break up the value of non-goal scores.

Here's how it can work:

The worst, least valuable type of behind is the rushed behind, and it should retain the 1 point value. I've included all non-kick scores as rushed behinds, because the main reason we're able to claim footy as a name for our game is that scoring is done with feet.

Then 2 points for a standard kick between the inner and outer posts. In modern football, players consider this an appropriate level of kicking ability for the highest league but the scores don't reflect this changing attitude. It's time for the league to catch up with the players and award a more meaningful score for getting the ball between any of the posts. It isn't an easy thing to do and only giving me...um I mean the players 1 point might hurt their confidence.

Behinds that hit the goalposts even if they then pass on the inside of the big sticks currently only count for one point. That's a travesty. Posters that travel through to goal should earn the full 6, those through to behind the 2 points, and those that bounce back into the field 3. That's because it's a better attempt than a standard 2-point behind, isn't as good as an angled-by-the-post-but-still-counts goal, and provides more emotion and drama to the game than just about any other scoring shot. In fact if it wasn't such a rare skill and the intention wasn't to raise the scores in a match there'd be a good argument for making a poster the real 6 pointer, with 3 points for getting in between both of them. Still if the 6 point goal is sacrosanct then at least give these difficult and dramatic kicks at least half the value of a goal.

This proposal will increase scores for struggling teams, so that even if they don't get the points on the ladder, they get more points on the scoreboard to lift their spirits But good sides can benefit too - even last year's losing grand finalists would've scored almost 3 goal's worth of extra points in last night's game under this system!

Join us and get behind the change! I will now collect my accolades for solving footy, please share your enthusiastic support below.

Yours sincerely,

Baron Maughton

Any behind scored with a banana kick of more than 30 degrees arc should be award pi points, just to make the scoring more interesting

But Pi is an irrational number, so that wouldn't fit in with the way the AFL runs the game ............................................

Sorry. Carry on.

As a Dockers supporter I fully endorse this magnificent idea, might net us 5-6 extra wins a year[emoji1360]

If you kick a torpedo from the goal line and kick it out of the stadium you should get 7 points that’d be heaps sick.

Best way to increase scoring is to let your opponents waltz away from the centre bounce repeatedly

Why spend 6 paragraphs explaining a theory on how to increase scores, just pull the two goal posts and make the point posts the goal posts.....

But I thought nobody liked circle-work
