Be very surprised if he plays more senior games than games with Coburg next year...can't see even half a dozen games for him unless we're carrying a few injuries.

He's not going to replace either McMahon or Newman as rebounding small defenders, and we've done very well this year playing taller blokes like McGuane or Thursfield on dangerous small/medium forwards (as I predicted we would in the pre-season) - much better than we ever did with Raines on them.

That leaves him the very difficult task of breaking into the midfield rotation - a task which will at a minimum, require him to have a massive pre-season equal to or better than what White put in this year, focusing heavily on his athleticism and stamina, plus improving his skills and decision making significantly.

If he puts in a lot of hard work and improves his weaknesses, he's still a slim possibility to break into the best-22.

Raines is a one deminsional player that needs to move oput of the back half to develope his game. He has tunnel vision and gets caught to often and his disposal needs improvement also.

I say give him an oppurtunity to break int the midfield, if he succeeds great, if not down back for a bit to get his trade value up for the GC17
 
From memory Wallace said late last season play your first 50 games in defence, then i'll look to move you into the midfield. He was on track to do that this season before injury struck. As much as our midfield is on the up curve I still see him as providing a touch of class and great long kicking skills around the midfield. Think I'd prefer him in there to Johnson and Edwards at least. To ensure we move up the ladder in 09, competition for places is what we need. all players picked on form every week, not on potential or reputation.
 
Could he be moved back to the back pocket and take over the position Kingy gets. Is he an upgrade on King?

Then again, with his decision making being pretty poor when under the pump, and those long looping hospital passes, he may need to look to try and get on a wing and in some space.

Would love to see him get some footage of his old man out and somehow 'suddenly acquire' what he needs so he can play in the guts!

the fact is raines is what 21-22 super year in 2006 down in 07
started well in 08 before getting injured.
i could name 10 players to go before andrew raines
hyde,pettifer,tivendale,johnson,casserly,howat,silvester,cartledge,king & even coggs.
when are you guys going to give this kid a break.
he is a deffinate upgrade to players like king.

wake up to yourselfs and support the kids through tough injury times
he has so much potential as a small defender that will in time have the ability to rotate through the midfield.

Don't think anyone said that he's gone. Just facing the reality that he's not a walk up start to our best 22 anymore...

Even replicating his 06 form, who do you think he'd replace from the line up v Hawthorn taking into account Foley and Brown to come back in?

I think he's a decent player, but unless his disposal and endurance go up a couple of notches, can't see him breaking into the current side when all are fit.
 
tradbait, are you guys bloody CRAZY. l agree with terry in that he is a required player and a valuable player how quick do we forget. I reckon he can play midfield just need some strength. will be alright in there with a bit of confidence. you dont just trade good young players like that. Get a grip you fools.

Three of the players you name are rookies not on the main list who are unlikely to be with us next year, three more are almost guaranteed delistments at season's end, leaving Pettifer and Coughlan (long-term injured who've shown much more than Raines at senior level), Johnson (veteran in his last years), and King.

When it comes to claiming Raines is in our top-25 players (not better than merely rookies, vets and the injured), it's much harder to make a case for him - which was my point and I'm sure it was also that of others.

Nobody's writing him off, merely being realistic about where he's at.

As for supporting the injured through 'tough times', is that what you're doing when you say you'd delist Pettifer and Coughlan ahead of Raines, even though they've shown far more at top level?

King doesnt have a position anymore, thats why we have improved. Raines was decent in round 1 against Carlton and helped turn the game, before getting injured in round 2. As someone mentioned before we need to get his trade value up so he can head home to GC17.
 
I'm just rapped that we can't easily find a spot in the side to someone as talented as Raines.

Either we've moved up to a level beyond that's beyond him and he won't make it, or he has to work his butt off and develop as a player to step up and break into the side.

Pretty happy with both outcomes, no more easy rides at Tigerland :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Your arguement seems pretty sound, but overlooks one key factor I believe. We can be deplorable defending the ball coming in against to small attacking forwards.

This is one area that Raines *may* also be able to fill.

Fair call, well said. I do think he is under the pump, but not compared to the list you have put forward.

I think we've improved a fair bit in that area this year dave - by playing 4 talls in the back half and letting McGuane or Thursfield play on the most dangerous medium/small, then let Newman & McMahon take the other less dangerous smalls.

Early on in the season we got caught again a few times playing a small/medium on a small/medium (one of those the game against North where Jones killed Raines, Newman and King at one time or another), but since McGuane or Thursfield have been doing the job we've improved significantly.

Add Rance to that mix and I think Raines will struggle to find a role which he does better than the above players.

I hope he gets the full pre-season which will allow him a fair dinkum crack at earning a spot somewhere on the ground.
