We are blessed with having smart, savvy and exciting point guards in the nba at the moment. the old (kidd, nash to an extent) has some stiff competition from the young (williams, paul) but who is the best PG in your opinion in the league? I have listed starting PGs and the next batch (to the best of my knowledge) in no particular order. who would be your top 5?

Arenas
Bibby
Billups
Calderon
Cassell
Davis, Baron
Felton
Fisher
TJ Ford
Jack
James, Mike
Kidd
Knight
Marbury (lol)
Martin, Darrick (UCLA represent!)
Miller, Andre
Nash
Nelson
Parker, Tony
Paul
Tinsley
Williams, Deron
Williams, Jason

I havent included players like Iverson, Wade or Mo Williams.

For me its:

1. Nash
2. Kidd
3. D. Williams
4. Davis
5. Parker, T (not the traditional PG I know)

It's heavily dependent on the team IMO.

For example, Utah wouldn't swap Deron Williams for anyone (except maybe Nash) since no-one else runs the pick-and-roll nearly as well, and that's the most important thing in Utah.

If I were starting a team from scratch, and only for this season (i.e. age isn't a factor), I'd go:
1. Paul (on this season's form - still to be seen if he can maintain it)
2. Nash
3. Williams
4. Davis
5. Kidd
6. Billups

Kidd at 5 is harsh, but he needs a specific type of team to be successful.

Not in the top 5, but Rajon Rondo is at least as good if not better than some on that list.

He is after all the starting PG on the team with the leagues best record ;)

Nash is the undisputed #1 PG in the league atm. An argument could be made that he is a top 5 all time PG as well.

As for who is next on the list, Chris Paul at the moment is the 2nd best PG in the NBA. The guy is playing at an MVP calibre level atm. Deron Williams and Kidd aren't far behind but Paul is 2nd to Nash in my books.

I'm keen to hear your argument.

Chris Paul ;)

Like I said in my first post, he's been the best PG this year from the games I've seen (and I love to watch Phoenix, so I've seen a lot of Nash :D). I reckon if you held the MVP voting today, Paul would get some 1st place votes.

From that sentence I'm assuming you think that Mo Williams plays as a SG/PG?

Ha! so you would actually have Paul ahead of LeBron, KG and Howard? You obviously have just been watching NOH games this year

I said "some 1st place votes", not most. And I never said he was my personal choice.

Lebron has been fantastic but has missed too many games to be the no.1 right now.
Howard has been a monster, no argument there.
KG has been great as well, but he has some great team-mates.
Paul has carried a NO team without any other star players to a 14-7 record. He'd certainly be in the mix.
Those 4 and Manu would make up my Top 5 in some order.

CP hasn't carried... the Hornets actually have the puzzles to the championship.

A decent defensive/rebounding/blocking centre in Chandler
decent scorers in Peja and West
A decent defender and 3 point shooter in Mo Pete
A all-star ball distributor in CP3, who can shoot the 3
and a ton of 3 point shooters on the bench who can provide scoring spark.

and also someone who can actually coach

Nash-best pure PG I have seen play in a long time

Billups-Mr.Big Shot still getting it done

D.Williams-rising up the list with a bullet and will be the next great PG imo

Paul-see D.Williams although I rate him higher than CP-3 in terms of PG ability

Kidd-probably could be higher on the list but I really dislike him and New Jersey

Has a 6th man ever won MVP?

Not with his career numbers. Nash should not be considered in the top 5, as his basketball career has been far from consistent. By this I mean, it took him 3-5 years to establish himself at all. Only when he moved to Phoenix has he been considered in the elite. BTW, I can't believe some people are saying Nash is better then Stockton and Tim Hardaway. Kidd on the other hand can be considered in the top 5. May not be the best shooter, but get's everything else done on the floor.

If I were to rate it on the season each player is currently having:
Paul
Nash
Deron
Kidd
Davis

Beg to differ.

You can't use the argument that Nash only became elite when he went to Phoenix, he was still a premier PG at Dallas. Yes he took his play to another level once he went to Phoenix but that shouldn't be held against him. Who knows how Magic would've done outside the Showtime Lakers where he was surrounded by HOF talent, or how Stockton would've done without one of the great Power Forwards of all time?? Every great player has been helped by their situation in one way or another. The thing with Nash is that we have the advantage of being able to compare how he has done at various different teams.

Also, Nash dominated the league in 05/06 when the only decent consistent players on his team were Marion and Kurt Thomas. Nash should've won 3 MVPs in a row. He not winning last yr was not right IMO.

I remember reading somewhere that if Nash leads the league in Assists this yr then he'll be only the 3rd PG in history to have done so for 4 consecutive seasons, Bob Cousy and Stockton are the first 2.

So yeh I think Nash by the time he retires will be considered a borderline top 5 all time PG.

Once again, I don't agree with someone averaging 15 ppg and 11apg getting the MVP. That year Shaq definately should have won it, and I'm not simply saying that because I go for the Heat. How can one of the greatest and most dominant players ever (Shaq) only win one MVP, when a scrawny, white, 6 foot point guard, who in some way burst onto the scene, win 2, and in consecutive years at that. It doesn't do justice to the NBA.

Furthermore, Shaq leading his teams to 4 championships (well 3, D-Wade to thank for one), while Nash has not accomplished anything. By this I mean, hasn't made the Finals with the best team going round. He's got 2 other all stars, and the rest are very potent 3 point shooters. If he's the MVP, by all means get them to the finals and I won't disagree.

Nash has far more support then Shaq, yet Shaq was able to get another championship.

There's a small matter of the Suns getting past the Spurs. Put the Suns in the East (like Shaq was with the Heat) and yeh Phoenix goes to the Finals. I agree Shaq should have more than 1 MVP. I also agree that Nash needs a ring if he is going to be considered one of the greats at his position. Too bad Amare can't play D.

oh how does Nash have more support than Shaq? Shaq had a decent player called D.Wade as well as a number of excellent role players. Anyways im not arguing that Nash is better than SHaq in his prime. Im just saying that Nash is the best pg going around and when he retires will prob be one of the great pg's ever.
