Are you happy with the job the recruiters have done at Tigerland in the last five years?

Is Richmonds recruiting manager the worst in the AFL?

I'd be interested in your opinions.

Nope
Probably
Though our recruiting manager is only part of the problem i think , its the fault of the coaching staff that we keep trading away draft picks for recycleds and use some of our remaining picks for recycleds to.

Would be interested in someone like Weavers opinion on wether Beck or Frawley and co is more to blame?

Apparantley last year if you believe the HUN we tried to get ports recruiting Manager. I would think these days recruiting managers are just about the most valued employee of a club so it wouldn't be easy to go and get a top quality one from another club.

Especially given that coaching and recruiting staff don't come under any salary cap.

Makes it perilous trying to compete with these larger income interstate clubs for the best men for the job.

I don't think you have to be a recruiting "genius" to have realised that King, Biddiscombe, Hudosn, Houlihan etc were not going to make us a premiership side !!!

Their rationale with them was flawed, the powers that be thought we just needed to "top up" our list for a premiership tilt - how wrong they were, the whole list with a few exceptions is just not up to it - our best players are not in the same league as the top teams best players, our middle ranked players, and the bottom end of our list is carlton like.

Miller is giving each employee at least 1 year to show their stuff. A recruiting manager can really only be replaced in the summer, anything else is irresponsable.

Replacing a recruiting manager is difficult. This is because recruiting is a network of contacts. Finding someone who knows all the school coaches and junior coaches is tough. Most of the recruiting managers are very long serving.

Every supporter of every club thinks their recruiting department is bad. Supporters expect 3-4 good players a year whereas most clubs get 1-1.5

How much is the fault of the recruiters, how much of player development? Bowden and Richardson should be better than they are, so is it safe to assume that Pettifer and Fiora are also under-developed?

How much responsability is down to the coaches? Have they insisted on trading early picks for duds like Hilton, insisted on recruiting favourites like King and Fleming? Have they seen a couple of games and insisted that early picks be used on the likes of Poyas and Pettifer who had a patch of good junior footy? Were these decisions by the coach or recruiting manager?

What about the decision to recruit half-forwards, was that a directive from the coach? The decision to top-up the list with mature guys like Nicholls?

The decision to have a short list and short rookie list was made by the bean counters, not the recruiters. The decision to renew contracts for the likes of Biddiscombe and Mills was not the fault of the recruiting manager.

I think Beck should probably go, but I am not laying all the blame at his door. Newman, Zantuck and Coughlan have been great value later round picks after all.

Great Post Weaver

Everything you say is spot on. Maybe I've been harsh on Beck, but his record ain't good and you'd have to agree with that.

Chuck in Ottens into players who haven't progressed as well IMHO.

How much of the quick fixes is due to the supporters putting pressure on the club to perform and get us back up to the top? We put so much pressure on that club - more than any other club i reckon.

We need a strong person at the top who can tell the supporters exactly what direction the club is taking and not deviate from that course. And that's a youth/quality trading policy. We're the club that started going down that track (mainly due to having no money) but it got us out of the woods at the time and we did start to get on our feet again. But as soon as we started to think we were the next big thing, we went against that policy to fill the team with hacks.

What worries me is that if we chose to go down that path, we won't have any members left because they've had enough. But it will be a while before we will be playing off for any grand final unless we do.
