you've taken the commercial route. many do. good luck with your journey into the wonderful world of wine. let me know what you thought of these 2.
 
I didn't go to a big store. Actually went to a small indy supermarket and got side tracked in the bottle shop - Was unplanned!!

One way to get much more out of your reds is to properly decant them and breathe them. Decanting gets rid of any sediment and breathing makes them "rust" ie combine with oxygen and brings out the fruit characters.

Remove the foil or lead capsule from around the top around the cork and let the bottle stand upright in a cool place out of direct sunlight for a couple of days. The sediment will settle on the bottom of the bottle (not all reds have sediment)

Then take the bottle, keeping it vertical, and carefully draw the cork out. Get a decanter or jug (give it a rinse first) and a torch.

In one gentle continuous pour, pour the wine into the decanter, with the torch shining up from below through the wine at the shoulder of the bottle. Don't worry about bubbles - they will sort themselves out if you are consistently pouring the wine.

Stop when the wine appears "smoky" ie you are seeing the sediment coming through. Pour the sediment wine down the sink or into a glass to drink when you are hammered. Leave the wine to breathe for a couple of hours in the decanter/jug, and you'll make a $15 bottle taste like a $25 bottle.

I suspect that Ernie was avoiding the wrath of the mods by substituting "spreader" for "opener" although in hindsight, his term is worse.

Have you had a go at the 2001 389? I reckon you could get 20 years in the cellar with that one. I've knocked off a couple and they drink very well right now. THe 2002 should be better but I haven't had the pleasure. Get a couple of St Halletts 2002 Blackwell's into your cellar. You will be glad you did in about 8 years from now!

As for the Blackwell, during the last vintage cellars 20% off half dozens sale, managed to clear out the last of their stock at two stores. This is one of the best wines I've seen, certainly the best value.

What whites?

I've only ever really enjoyed (to the same level of a good Shiraz) one white, the Tempest Gew**rztraminer (bought from the cellar door at Yaldara). It's something I'm looking to expand my appreciation of.

Whites?

A few faves include

Vasse Felix, Classic Dry White - very fruity with plenty of sizzle!

Cullen - (Forget it's name) - it's the classic dry white around $25. Arguably the best from Margaret River in this style

Leewin Estate - Almost anything

Scarborough Chardonnay from Hunter Valley, NSW. I challenge anyone to find me a better chardy in the $20-$30 range.

Shaw and Smith Sav Blanc - Aussie best? beats Cloudy Bay IMO.

Mt Riley Sav Blanc (NZ) - must be the 2004 (not 2003) premier sav blance for the price $20 ish

I'm a real sucker for the WA Margaret River dry whites (inc. sem/sav). Evans and Tate CDW is consistently good as is the Madfish. Their wines are much more zesty and more fruit driven than the east coast varieties. Basically they kick ass in this style of wine.
