yep, but we still came last.

i think looking at our points total is of greater benefit here rather than the position where we finished. this season we came into it without winning a shield game for 2 years. we won 4 this season alone.

we lost phil hughes to international duties, who was the leading run scorer prior to this happening

our bowling stocks are getting better

1 wicket away from a shield final

I realise all of that, but we still came last - that needs to be reinforced with the playing group, they came last - dead last again.

You are right as well, the batting is diabolical, I accidentally threw the newspaper out before reading Berry's article on it, so I'm hoping he has plans.

that being said, by the end of today it might be confirmed that Hughes will be playing with SA all next season (if he gets out without making a ton)_

Coming 'dead last' doesn't mean much when it's that damn close between all sides. Sure, it's a good motivating factor to put to the playing group, but they aren't going to lose sleep over it. The batting does need to improve, but we then probably have the best bowling group in the comp now.

Take that last wicket against WA, and we are talking about the Shield final right now.

Add to that Hughes, Ferg and Sayers all made the Shield team of the year; with Richo, Botha, Ferg and Hughes all making the one day team of the year. Extremely positive season, can't wait for the next one.

What's that?
Kane Richardson stuffing up the easiest run out in the history of run outs

In the last over when Tassie are 8 wickets down and require 7 off the last over. Richo misses the stumping, causes an overthrow and brings Tassie within 6 runs off victory.

Tassie won with a ball to spare......

And it was deja vu today, Tasmania beating us by 1 wicket on the 2nd last ball.

Richardson threw the ball at Hilfenhaus, deflected off him, and they score a run off that
Love Richo but does he have a brain? Why on earth did he throw the ball? And then the keeper had a ping at the bowler's end too  Chaos. We were ahead of the count. Singles/Dot balls meant we would win. How about some composure?

not to mention it put paine on strike and he hit the next ball for 4!

The Redbacks will never prosper with the management we have today. I won't be attending any more matches after being a regular for years. My complaint has been the arrogant disrespect given to SA born players. You cannot tell me they would have done worse than the lot that they have brought from interstate. Would love Jamie Cox to return to Tasmania. Cullen Bailey has been the standout improver in grade cricket for the past 18 months but has been ignored by selectors. As a batsman he has more grit and ability than some of our "batsmen". I remember his winning innings in last years district final.(Of course the SA selectors were nowhere to be seen on those days!) His improvement has been because of his workrate and concentration after years of disappointing treatment from selectors. I see him as an allrounder who could be a handy wicket taker if given an opportunity. In 2 leadup Premium games he has starred with the bat but he of course will not get a game in any of the Redbacks games. Stuff SA cricket for me.....!!!!

Agree.

It is devastating the number of fringe recruits and interstate discards that we've sifted through over the years. And the overseas 'pros' we've had. And really who are the success stories? Klinger, Christian...? Yet we watch Harris and Cosgrove prosper elsewhere.

I have no issue with guys from the ACT (Lyon, Miller) or NT (Skewes, Richardson) coming here as we're a small state and they obviously have no team.

But the long line of ageing journeyman who have squeezed out one last contract at our expense or younger player who is no better than the local product shits me to tears.

It should be an advantage in our state that guys like Alex Gregory, Kelvin Smith and Travis Head have a slightly easier path to state level. Sure, we might not have the depth of talent the larger states do but we can fast track the talent that we do have. In NSW/Vic those same guys can get lost in the mix.

Tassie have produced a bunch of test players over the last decade or so that outstrips what their population warrants. That should be our target.

tassie have their fair share of ringers as well.

as far as i see it, it comes down to the diluted grade system. cricket isn't the powerhouse sport it once was, and as we know the A grade district scene is nowhere near as strong as it was 20 years ago. until the mergers happen, SA cricket will still have a huge (and continually widening) gap between grade and 1st class.
