This is an official reminder to everyone who wishes to quote articles from newspaper websites, the AFL website, or pretty much anywhere.

You MUST not quote the whole article. You MUST obey the BigFooty Article Quoting Rules as found here:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=607818

I'm getting heartily sick of having to edit posts every time someone quotes an article in full. As of NOW the Adelaide Mods will be handing out yellow cards each and every time we have to edit a post to remove the quoted text.

This is your first, last and only warning!

Gulp! i of course would never do such a thing :D...honest! (starts to run away)

Why is this?

The article I quoted said it came from Sportal and who the author was and date.

I wouldnt think its plagiarism????

Or is BF being pedantic about articles?

I would like to know the reasoning.

It seems it only occurs in the AFC forum and not addressed in others?

Not that I'm having a go at you Vader obviously, but problem is...half the articles get deleted like 12 months on.

Ie you go back to articles that are posted a few years back, and they are no longer there.

Can you please post this as I am not allowed to access this page I don't think I have done any thing wrong but I would not mind reading it

Your wish is my command...
The reproduction of articles on BigFooty has gotten a bit out of control lately.

The Official BIG rule is now:

Headline
link
Excerpt up to a paragraph
link

No more, unless you have specific remarks about specific paragraphs or sentences in which case:

Your comment
Quote
More comment

As of now, entire articles are not to be posted. This includes in private boards and social groups.
and
The Forum Rules have been updated to clarify this rule. The "Keep it Legal" rule has been split into two rules:
Quote:

* Keep it legal. Discussing illegal activities is a no-no. No hacks, torrents, file swapping info or material of that nature. Publishing information injuncted or otherwise likely to cause the site legal grief is also not allowed. Frac: Mid to Serious
* Keep it referenced. When posting articles from other sites you must give due recognition to the source including a link if possible. Keep the posting to headline; link; excerpt up to a paragraph; link. Posting of articles without comment or review (e.g. posting every article from a particular journal) is not permitted. Frac: Minor to Serious

It isn't perfect and I'll probably adjust the wording a little but the intent remains the same.

BigFooty received legal notice from one of the media outlets requiring them to remove all instances where articles from their publications had been quoted in full. BigFooty decided to modify their article quoting rules in order to prevent them from being sued by any other media outlets.

The law permits "fair use" when quoting articles like this - that's generally around 10%. Quoting of entire articles DOES constitute plagiarism and violates the copyright laws.

Just a question Vader, a few days back I posted a link with a listing of results obviously I did the wrong thing (innocent mistake) so can we not even list results, so say for the Brownlow in a few weeks time how would we go about that?

I know it's a problem. Dead Links... where would the internet be without them?

Unfortunately, it's BigFooty policy. I'm getting really sick & tired of editing quote after quote after quote - I've probably done at least 10 today alone. As a result, it's time to wield the big stick in order to get people to clean up their own messes.

I have a similar issue with the AFC website, with the way they do their "Crows in the SANFL" and "Injury Update" reports. They always put these on the same URL, so the old data is lost when they update the website each week.

I know the one you are referring to - the Rising Star votes by voter.

I agree it would be easier to allow this sort of thing to be posted. Unfortunately, in doing so you're still quoting 90% of the article. As such, you just have to abide by the rules - effectively all you can do is say "the stats are available - just follow this link and you'll find them".

Thanks so the thread I started on the Porps out of the Age is ok and done correctly ?.Just to clarify
Thanks in advance
You can't go wrong by just including the link. That said, it might be helpful for the other board members if you had quoted the title of the article and the first para or two, so they can make an assessment whether or not they wish to click the link and read more.

The mods & admins went to a lot of effort to remove all the fully quoted articles we could find. If you find any more, just let me know.

The new rule only came into effect a month or two back, so there are probably a number of articles still around in the archives which we just haven't found.

BigFooty are expecting a quid-pro-quo from the major media outlets, in the form of proper attribution when BF is used as a source. If you do see the Rooch plagiarising stuff previously found on BF, just let us know. The admins would be VERY interested to hear about it.
