Angus Monfries to Melbourne. Four year deal. Rival clubs convinced it's happening. Dees need a hard working small forward.

Presumably they'll be an article come midnight too

Free Agency Rules

A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service. (restricted free agent)

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs. If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club. His club has the right to match the presented offer.

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft. If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

(i know what you're thinking: is an angus monfries rumour even thread worthy? but hey i figured some people have stopped reading the D&T thread and I don't really think the other monfries thread was suitable)

He's a restricted free agent so the have to pay a little bit over for him (hence the reported four years). If he was unrestricted you'd imagine he'd only get 3 or so, but then he'd be older so it's almost a moot point.

4 years?

He wont get that here, so if he wants it he should take it.

I know we made him play a certain way this season, but he still played poorly in my view. Defensive forwards are still allowed to present every now and then.

All the best to him if he leaves.

I assume it uses similar rules to how the expansion compensation was judged. Length of contract and monetary value?

Sheesh, let's hope so. I don't think that's it, but if that were to be the case we'd be laughing.

Important question for Gus is whether the Melbourne guernsey looks as good on him as the Essendon one. Because you can bet that Channel 9/Triple M will get hours worth of material out of that pearler.

Fairly sure the AFL judge each free agent as they see fit.

If we get anyone through free agency we'll get nothing for Gus as the AFL will look at that as a trade of sorts. If we don't get anyone we'll most likely end up with late 2nd early 3rd.

The rumour is the AFL won't be as generous with FA compo as GWS/GC compo. Which makes perfect sense to me given FA is universal whereas only GWS/GC could sign players the way they did. like, i'm fine with the teams that lost players to expansion teams getting nicer compo than teams that lose FA's. We lose Monfries, ok we can just push harder for FA (X). We have that option. Those teams that lost players to the expansion, like the dogs and ward, could really only cry in the corner. (Melbourne the expectation obvs.)

Really, the AFL and the media have done a lousy job explaining FA compo. The ongoing confusion regarding "His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period." the prime example.

So no one is that fussed he may be leaving? he is one of my favorite players and i like him as a personality around the club so ill be sad to see him go. Majority don't really care though?

Well we got an HS article, but from Mark Stevens and so of course it says something else:

ESSENDON forward Angus Monfries remains unsigned and in demand, with Port Adelaide chasing his services....Although his priority is to remain at Windy Hill, it is believed Monfries will be offered no more than a two-year deal.....It is believed Port may be willing to offer the 25-year-old the security of a four-year contract to return to South Australia.

Speculation Melbourne is strongly pursuing Monfries is wide of the mark, with the Demons yet to approach his management.....Essendon is keen to retain Monfries, but the length of the deal on the table is a sticking point as the Bombers juggle several list management decisions.

No doubt it won't be as good as the GWS/GC compo. It'd be insane if it were.

The compensation as you say is free cap space.

Yeah i would doubt the compensation would be what i said. I just threw it up as a starting point, no one has explained any of that stuff to me.

By the sounds of that article by mark Stevens, he doesn't want to leave, we don't want him to leave, but he is attracting interest. Which seems very similar to what has been happening his entire career.

It's similar to McPhee. Yeah sure he's still in the best 22 but really it's a pretty good time for both sides to spilt. And this time we might get something back.

Yupp, feels just like the Mcflee situation except we get something in return... Can't say I'd be terribly dissapointed to lose Gus.

Think he'll be a servicable player at most playing for the Dee's but nothing to that we'll really look back and miss.

If it happens, good luck to him I say.

I think Gus definitely tries his guts out, and I like the guy from what I've seen of him in interviews etc... Seems like a nice guy... but I just don't think he's that good a player... and more to the point, I'm just not sure where he fits in at Essendon. If it's as a lead up half forward, then Crameri has him covered x100. If it's as an outside mid, we've got plenty of those... and better.

If he can get a four year deal elsewhere and perhaps a fresh start, I'll be happy to see him go... and I'll also be cheering him on wherever he goes and hoping he does well.

If he stays, then he needs to start delivering.

Apparently we're only offering Gus a 2-year deal. With the free agency if port offer 4-yr deal then we have to is match it for Gus to remain. (correct me if I'm wrong)
