Just got back from the game and i think we lost the game more than the Crows won it. I really don't know were to start because there were a fair few reasons and tactics that contributed to this:

1. First off the injuries really hurt us. Thornton's composure and experience would have helped immensely and Hartlett was presenting very well in the first quarter. Also having two on the bench for 3/4 quarters is very taxing on the players.

2. There were many many crucial errors we made that cost us goals, probably around 4 or 5, these skill error and brain fade have to be minimize for us to be consistent.

3. I noticed the crows had one or two loose players in front of Fev all the time, whereas when i looked down the other end, i couldn't see any players sitting in front of Burton or Goodwin. It was like we were playing 20 against 18. They used these men much more effectively than we did.

4. We got smashed in the clearences and that is because Cloke and Kruezer are not number one ruckman. They aren't tall enough, we have to get Hampson back in next week if he is fit. If not give Aiske a go, the hitouts were 55 to 17 their way, there is no way on earth you can win a game with that difference not matter how good the players at the ruckman's feet are.

5. On the centre square, what the hell is Ratten doing with Gibbs? Played the whole game in the defensive 50 on Thompson, Goodwin and Porplyzia when they went forward. He is a great clearance player, has shown that, he is a bloody midfielder for god sake. It's frustrating to see a great talent like Gibbs being used in a role that a Russell type player can do.

Changing my tone a little, a few positives would have to be Russell and Browne. Russell's disposal is still very suspect but his attack and defensive pressure was very very good today. Missed a few crucial shots at goal but at least he knows what he has to work on now. Before it seemed he had nothing to offer. As for Browne, very good signs, i would have liked to see him run off the hard back flank and use a little of his pace but i'm sure Ratten will experiment with this later on. Very good attack on the ball for a young player.

Was fairly disappointed in the lose because we could have won that game. It was definatley winable and to loose by 30 points is hard to swallow.

Good post, agree with everything you said. How was Browne's leap for that mark in the 1st? Would have been the most spectacular 1st possession in history. Pity he didn't get his hands anywhere near it!!!

Definitely could have won that one. No matter how crappy the umpiring was (and it was) we can't blame them we turned the ball over time and time again. The good bits were good and the bad bits were horrendous.

BTW, I liked what I saw of Browne but it is possible he may be slower than Bentick??

Good post- also, we didn't put them away in the 1st quarter. We ended up with 5.7 I believe and could have been further in front. Also quiet games from Judd, Fevola and Kreuzer a bit down- so that makes it hard.

Agree that Gibbs was wasted in the backline. You have to get your good ball winners in the action especially against the likes of Thompson, Edwards, etc. who eventually got well on top in the middle and restricted our running game.

Injuries starting to be a factor. Depth will be tested.

Let's hope the boys lift for Juddy's return to Subiaco.

Good post i agree with all of it.

The tackling and forward pressure was well down today compared to last 2 games.

I do have one negative comment.....can someone tell me who is our backline coach?. Our kick-ins are pathetic, we have a guy sitting on both pockets and continually kick it to them. this ends up being criss crossed over and over and eventually kicked backwards before conceding a goal. its a shocking set up when we do the kick ins and skill errors always see it come undone. You watch any other team and the way they bring it in is quick and precise movement that always finds open targets because the ball is being moved a lot faster. This slow shit we do just gives the opposition more time to man up and shut us down.

As has been said, we got smashed in the clearances today.

What worried me most however was the complete lack of movement forward of the ball. I don't know what Ratts game plan is but we seem so static in our forward line. There wasn't any leading with intent, no one trying to create space for Fev, Fish etc and it looked really bad tbh

today for me the importance of richard hadley was truely realized..pressure around stopages was very poor..well below the standard set while hes been playing..while his replacement bentick played OK was still nowhere near as good as it was with hadley in there..

anyone know the extent of his injury?..
