Richmond offering pick 20 for simmonds?

SEN believes that a 3 way deal between Stkilda, Freo and the tiges is about to be done. Freo gives up simmonds to richmond. Richmond gives freo pick 20 and then heath black goes to Freo and pick 20 to Stkilda. Richmond is making a good deal as they leave there PSD number 1 pick open to regaing Ottens or pick up Bowden. Any thoughts.

If the deal for Ottens which they were talking about on 3aw tonight goes through ie. Ottens to Geelong, Maloney from Geelong to Melb for Melb's #12 pick and Richmond get picks 12 & 16 then I'd offer Freo a 3rd or 4th rounder for Simmonds. Freo will then need to decide if they want nothing for him or at least a low round pick. That way we get to keep the #1 pick in the PSD.

If we are going to pick up Simmonds I don't think we will be able to re draft ottens in the PSD. Remember this whole situation with Ottens was all about money (because we as a club are trying to cut costs), at this stage in the trading nothing for us has occurred but if we pick up Simmonds then our potential for ttp is greater than what it is currently because we still have Ottens and we would have Simmonds on top of that as well.

So what I'm getting at is, the way things stand currently we can't have both, the only way that is going to be possible is if we off load enough players tomorrow in the last day of trading to off set the cost to us of redrafting Ottens in the PSD. So if we can't off load Ottens tomorrow and we manage to get the trade through for Simmonds with pick 20 then we will be having a fire sale for some of our other players in order to create enough funds to pick Ottens up in the PSD.

one scenario ppl havent mentioned but is a real possibility if the otto trade falls thru is, otto resigns for us at a reasonable figure, there is no way he would chance his arm in the PSD bc the hawks have the cash to nab him and will! dont believe dermie for a second... and regardless of whats gone on, otto would prefer to stay here than end up at the hawks who are more of a rabble than us

Freo will then need to decide if they want nothing for him or at least a low round pick. That way we get to keep the #1 pick in the PSD.

Given that
a) this draft is very difficult / even to pick below about pick 6
b) even in better years, picks in the third, fourth and fifth round are speculative (to quote Weavers talent pyramid - the difference in talent between picks 1 & 10 will probably be greater than between 10 & 70).

Freo really aren't going to care too much about a third of fourth rounder - after all, if they are short a player they just get another round at the end of the draft. The advantage they get out of us using pick 1 in the PSD on Simmonds is the first live pick is out of the way, and we can't wield the "come to us for free" stick over another Freo player (or another teams player).

So it may be better to trade pick 20 *as long* as we are convinced that pick 1 is the PSD will obtain a better player than pick 20 in in the real draft.
