I think he has been unfairly maligned on this board and by quite a stretch. I do agree that he does look shaky at times in the D50 and that Batchelor should be played there ahead of him.

However, I am puzzled as to why he isn't played in his natural habitat down forward? He can lay a tackle, can clunk a mark overhead and has shown that he can lead out of the F50 playing as a HFF. We have been screaming for a HFF with clean hands that is dangerous aerially. Batchelor to D50, and Petterd up forward with White making way. I thought Knights was going to play that leading HFF type for our team but so far he has been a midfielder.

Thoughts?

I agree, think he's been solid without being brilliant. Didn't have much of a pre-season either although he needs to lay a few more tackles (as do most of the team).

Disagree about his natural habitat being down forward, really struggled up forward over his career and only had a few games where he proved to be a headache for opposition defenders. Petterd himself has admitted that he played his best footy (pre-afl) down back and is happy to be there.

In saying that, it's nice to know that should the situation require it, we could throw him down forward where he may pluck a mark and kick a goal.

Thought he played the 3rd man up role beautifully last night, spoilt iPod and baby Huey at most inside 50's.
I agree and thought he was ok last night, but surely Batchelor could have played the same third man up role and has better foot skills which is what we need in our D50. I also reckon he's better defensively. We have an option for that role, yet we play a forward there instead?

To be fair, playing for Melbourne recently and not being the focal point up forward, anyone would have struggled...

It's his kicking though and Batch can play the same role with better skills and that's why he shouldn't be in the team.
Agree, just mentioned in other thread that we have too many average kicks in the backline. If we can get Batch playing a similar defensive role then his kicking will help us out.

We certainly lack class in the backline. An area where you need great kickers.

I would entertain putting Deledio back there again. Create that run, zip and skill from the backline. The class factor goes up a heap with him there. He doesn't get tagged and he can be a vital part of our play. I hate how we have average kickers in our backline. This to me would be a great solution. Vlastuin, Ellis, Helbig, Conca all to contribute more in the middle to take his place, but have him in the backline as that general.

Morris Rance Grimes
Deledio Chaplin Houli

Just a suggestion. I know we were crying out for him to be in the midfield, but to me, he is needed moreso in the backline.

Just on the issue of petterd, is he injured? Saw him plonked at ff in the last quarter and he could not raise a gallop. Was limping like an absolute chicken

Like the idea. We are creating some good midfield depth to take his spot in there now. Can always throw him forward or on the ball when required like we used to depending on situations. He'd still get tagged though but it would free up Houli as a side can't tag two half backs as they need to score themselves. Would help if we could pinch a Thomas or a Cooney to add some zip back into the midfield.

Heres ahead of Batchelor in my opinion but Batch/Dea may take Houli's spot yet.

Knights rotates through the midfield and allows Cotch and co to rest up forward. Knights is ahead of Petterd as a half forward but Petterd could play still play in the forward pocket but Kingy is holding his own atm.

Petterd should inmprove further with more experience.

Batchelor's time will come no doubt, as will Dea's for that matter. Our backline is not as solid as some suggest and Ellis can go up the ground as well.

Our backline is better than the Geelong scoreline suggests though and I cannot see us recruiting backman for a few years unless an exceptional value proposition falls in our lap!!

The guy gave away 3 goals from his own hand against Collingwood. Unfairly maligned?...........you must be kidding:eek: Two of those mistakes came from dropped marks and against Geelong he refused to mark the ball as third man up even though he should have. Every time he goes near the ball I think/expect him to make a mistake. The difference between the gun defenders and the run of the mill ones like Petterd are sure hands and even though you don't have to be a brilliant kick you have to make brilliant decisions and play within your own limitations. He doesn't have either:thumbsdown:

I sometimes wonder whether any of you guys know that players have bad games.. Cotch had a shocker on Saturday night and turned it over on a couple of occasions..
It happens, Ricky has gone alright in the Yellow and Black and will get better IMO

I reckkon he was ok in defence but i prefer batchelor..i like to see him up forward tho i reckon he is more suited there...

What about Cotchin? Turned the ball over horrendously and gave away a soft free that resulted in a goal and their momentum surging... He hasn't been our worst player by any stretch of the imagination. He's still quite young and I think he has quite a lot of potential.
Just want to see him tried as a forward.
I'm sick of everyone scape goating a player when we lose, but when we win gee whiz we're bloody destined to be top 4...

Thanks STW - was trying to think what it was about his game Sat night that was better than previous weeks - he was spoiling instead of marking in the backline. Maybe he has learnt a lesson from previous two weeks - welldone to him if thats the case.

Agree with OP. It really bothers me that everyone uses Ricky as a scape goat and bags his disposal. Just looking on the AFL website, he is 117th in the LEAGUE for disposal eff % with 77.8%. To run through a few names who are behind Ricky.. Joel Selwood, Harry O, Dylan Grimes, Bryce Gibbs, Heath Shaw, Corey Enright, Brett Deledio, Andrew Mackie, Scott Pendlebury, Tyson Goldsack, Nick Malceski, the list goes on.. so as you can see he is ahead of a lot of other more elite players and even players who play a similar role to him.

He is ranked equal 50th for clangers but i reckon he is the least of our problems when you consider in the top 50 for clangers so far this year we have: McGuane 8th, Jackson and Rance = 15th, Cotchin 20th, Deledio 25th then Petterd = 50th. Having your number 1 and 2 midfielders in the top 30 isnt a great result.

So i think people are getting their assessments of him a bit wrong. I thought he was pretty solid against Geelong. Was killing every contest in the air making our defenders jobs a lot easier.

Its just frustrating that certain players become immune to sprays about mistakes they make because of who they are and what they might of achieved in the past. Personally I'm more annoyed at Cotchins efforts so far this season. Now i love him more than the next person but he simply hasnt really stood up at all when we needed him to. Made some really bad decisions and clangers the last few weeks, but we will never see a post or thread about that on BF will we..
