Ricky Petterd

I agree he played ok mas the 3rd man up v the Cats, but the difference I see with him and Batch, is Batch marks when 3rd man up, Ricky punches every time.

thats just a confidence / experience thing. Grimes did the exact same thing up until this year virtualy. It is frustrating when someone double fists the ball cause they really should mark it, but we dont know what has been drilled into him at training either. But no one jumped up and down about grimes punching instead of marking cause he was a young talent who we were all excited about.. (not having a crack at you in particular, just making a point)

Good point, but Ricky has many years on Grimes and in fact I remember many people saying Grimes should have marked more.

You are probably right though, confidence / instructions, what we would know looking from the outside in :thumbsu:

I am just a huge Batch fan, and havent really seen anything from Ricky down back, that Batch cant offer and then some.

Agree wholeheartedly re Batch. Think he is a more solid option down back than Petterd. As I said, would love to see him play forward and Batch down back, especially so when kicking out of defensive 50.

i don't know why everyone is talking up Batch! for me he has been hugely disappointing. Has been getting beaten 1 on 1's easily. For me this year so far Batch looks like he's beefed up and lost a yard of pace.

You have to look at form on its merits. Batch forced to play KPD and Ricky playing on smalls / meds. Harsh to call him disappointing.

Took the words right out of my mouth...
Chaplin takes the monster gorilla forward, Rance takes #2 defender. Grimes/Batch to take 3rd tall or play as third man up. That is where his best position is. Not against another KPF, although he did it last year and completely annihilated Hurley. He just needs continuity, guessing he'll be in this week anyway since Petterd is injured.

It's his kicking though and Batch can play the same role with better skills and that's why he shouldn't be in the team.
Went at 100 percent with his 16 possessions on the weekend. Batchelor would have never done that!

Missed tackles, left his man loose, put his team mates under the pump with woeful hand balls and in general looked panicked and flustered.

There's some things stats don't show.

If you're up for it, I have a challenge. Re-watch the game and rate each of his disposals out of 10 and average it out. Bet you you don't end up with 100 per cent.

Both Pettard and Batch have been reasonable ...I see Pettard improving each week but at the expense of Batch.
End of the day, no net improvement to the team.

Matt Whites still running around and we a focusing on Petterd. It is a joke! Daniel Jackson, Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin all got 5 clangers on the weekend and we are using Petterd here as the whipping boy. There were a lot worse. What about the three direct turnovers within 15 metres of goal by Cotchin/Chapin/Grimes that caused direct turnovers resulting in goals 5 seconds later. Petterd didn't do any of that.

I am not a Petterd fan, but doesn't deserve to be dropped!

I think what you say is right , we already have players as bad as him. The question is: what has he brought to the team?

yeah its a close call Morro, i too rate batch, must admit I cant agree with the knockers on Petterd, his disposal is crisp, can mark, when third man up i dare say the instruction would be too spoil...he seems to find the ball a little easier than batch which indicates to me he works hard to be on the recieve. I wouldnt be unhappy with batch in the team but i reckon their is a spot for Petterd, he s worth a million helbigs

My problem with him is you can't have Grimes, Rance, Chaplin and him all in the one backline. That's four blokes who can't kick the ball. If you're playing 3 key backs you can't play another bloke who shits himself under pressure and misses targets.

I agree that Jackson, Cotchin and Deledio's kicking was either not up to their usual standards (Lids and Cotchin) or plain not good enough (Jackson), but that's not what we're discussing here. He wasn't the worst user on the weekend, but he's consistently one of the worst kicks in the 22 and doesn't offer much upside on what he's doing now.

Id question your ratings of chaplin rance and grimes kicking, judd standard they aint, by HB standards they are good

Don't get me wrong, I think they're all handy/decent, but there's a reason Martin didn't use Grimes when he was flying past him on the outside on Saturday. None of them would be in our top 10 kicks.

I'd have them all as 5.5/6 out of 10, but they're not exactly line breakers or pinpoint kicks. We can't have four of that standard in the one back half, that's all.

Can he play midfield or an inside/tagger role? If he can, get Lids out of there who IMO isn't a great inside player, and put him back on the HB line where we need good ball users/decision makers.

I'd rather Knights be the lead up medium forward than Petterd. Not a Petterd hater, but it's all about finding where players will be of best use, and I'm just not sure it's in the backline for him. Happy to be proven wrong though.

My biggest issue with Petterd other than stalling Batchelor's development is he does not go 100% and did pull out of a contest that cost us a very important goal on Saturday night. I was watching from right behind the goals where Joel Selwood kicked the first goal in the second half and Petterd came across but there were two players coming from the other direction. If he went hard enough he could have touched it and Batchelor would have done this Petterd pulled out with no effort too soft for my liking.

Watch it before you comment!

The only person stalling Batchelors development is Batchelor.
I'm worried about that boy as I had high hopes 18 months ago.Petterd punching as third man up is much better than trying for marks.
More worrying for me is the form of blokes like Cotchin in the immediate sense. I reckon he's had a pretty average season thus far.Quite average in fact.
Add Lids mindset when it goes against him,Dan Jackson's refusal to play within his limitations,Jacks decreasing leg speed,Ivan's body, our small key defenders, lack of midfield rotations,Shane Tucks future,Reece Concas foot, poor goal kicking conversion, our weak mental state against good teams, poor defensive stats...These are just some of the things that concern me more than whether Ricky Petterd is playing or not.

You've make me wanna top myself...

My understanding was we recruited experienced AFL players on the rookie list for depth in the event of injuries. So we wouldn't use first season players when not ready. Petterd was recruited in case of injuries.

How does Petterd walk in the 22 without fuss? We have Dea and Batchelor recruited to play that position, and I am sorry, but I would much prefer to see a young player make mistakes Petterd is making every single bloody week than a rookie list player recruited for depth.

I am one of Hardwick's biggest fans. This decision has started me question him. I think we have gone backwards from last year. Fix it now Dimma. Stop playing bloody favorites.

For the life of me, I thought our average players for years in White and Jackson would only be on the list for depth. Our kids are being ignored that were recruited on his watch. The Coburg team has too many players that should be now ready for senior footy recruited in the draft by us the past three years.

There is no way Petterd should be in our 22 at this point in time.

Unfortunately we have players playing for Coburg who aren't going to make it from the looks of things.
It's all good and well to say they should be playing but I'm not so sure.
For example ill use Arnot. Everything I've seen of him points towards him staying at Coburg. Dea never gets his bloody hands on the ball at senior level and I reckon Batchelor is going like a busted arse so what do you do?
Helbig came in but he needs a chill pill and to pull his head in among other things.Depth might not be so great.
