Cliff Young dies

03nov03

AUSTRALIAN ultra-marathon legend Cliff Young has died in Queensland. He was 81.

Young died while spending time at a friend's home on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
The former potato farmer rose to fame by winning the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne ultra-marathon in 1983 at the age of 61.

Young, who was instantly recognisable by his distinct shuffling running style, ran over 20,000 kilometres in his competitive ultra marathon career. - AAP

Sad news indeed.

I remember well Cliff Young's marathon in '83 and it was a terrific effort for a fella at his age. 1983 was a great year for Australia such as the America's cup and movies like Crocadile Dundee. An old potato farmer joined the world stage along these efforts.

Cliff Young deserves his accolades along with his farewells, and may he rest in peace. It's efforts like his that makes you feel proud to be Australian.

Hate to put in order your distorted memories, but while Young won the marathon, and Australia won the America's Cup in 83, Crocodile Dundee was not released until 1986.

Do they still run the Sydney to Melbourne marathon ?
It use to get huge media coverage when people like Cliff,Pat Farmer and Yannis Kouris did it,but then it went quiet.

With the cheap airfares these days, they just fly Virgin.

Nice to see someone start a thread on this topic.

RIP Cliff Young,Long may you be remembered.

It really is hard to believe that an aging potatoe farmer from Beech Forrest(a spec,i have being there),who trained in gumboots and only "shuffelled" could win a race from Syd to Melb.
His 'trick' was that he hardly slept.
The whole story really proves that fact is stranger than fiction!!!
Sadly i read that late in this life he experienced som hard times so i hope he died peacefully and with those he loved.

He even got to marry a younger girl without having money!! Man there is hope for me yet (sorry darling, I still love you & the kids!!).:p

RIP Mr Young (even when you're old)
