Kinda sad to read in the paper that Gaslight Records in Bourke St. Melbourne had closed, desperately seeking a new owner.

I used to haunt that place back in the 80s-early 90s, as they were one of the only places in town to stock a eclectic range of funk, euro-soundtracks and obscure roots music all under the one roof. The staff knew their stuff, the calendars were great and the special days (nude day!) were fun, as were the many live performances and instore appearances made by various artists.

Growing older my disposable income was not longer what it was and my visits to the store were less frequent.

Wandered in there a few months back to see a ghost town of a store, filled with assorted tables of the cheap junk you may find at Sanity or the like and their once loaded racks were sadly depleted.

A sign of the times perhaps, but a sad occasion nonetheless.

I only went there a few times and it really didn't seem any different than other music stores... perhaps a sign of the times. I just hope the same fate doesn't befall Missing Link.

Or 78s and Dada's in Perth. Any of you guys ever been there? Without them we would all be listening to Matchbox 20, Delta and Coldplay.

Does Doug Thomas still work at Dada's in Perth? He ran Umbrella music record shop and Greasy Pop record label in Adelaide in the 80's. Played guitar in The Spikes. Lanky lookin guy.

I was over there in 1995 (okay it's 10 years ago) and ran into him at Dadas. Great bloke Doug. I know when the Mice use to go to Perth in the 90's he use to still go to see them.

I used to love going to Gaslight, picked up my share of hard to find albums and stuff........sad to hear that it's gone!!

At least Basement Discs is still there. :)

Most of CD my purchases over the past few years have been from Gaslight. I liked checking out the latest Aussie independent releases on their listening post. I also enjoyed a couple of great instore shows, especially Aunty Jack & Thin Arthur. It will be a shame to lose them.

Thankyou Leaping Lindner. The last i heard he was working at Dada's and doing a band with James Baker. Not sure if this is still the case.

Vale.

Great shop. "Nude Day" - what an institution.

Saw quite a few bands do in-stores, too. And used to chat with Chuck Skatt (charles Jenkins, icecream hands) occasionally. Few other notables worked there: Barb Waters, Mal McBeath (Warner Bros/Overnight Jones).
