Essendon plan to honour former AFL chairman Ron Evans at their first game of the coming premiership season.
Evans, also a former player with the Bombers and club chairman, died in a Melbourne hospital after a battle with abdominal cancer. He was 67.
Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said the club was deeply saddened to learn of Evans' death.
Evans played 64 games at full-forward for the Bombers from 1958-62, booted 210 goals and was the Coleman Medallist in 1959-60. He also represented Victoria five times.
He left Essendon and played for West Perth in the WAFL but returned to Essendon in a management position and served as chairman from 1988-92, which included overseeing the club's move from Windy Hill to the MCG.
"As a former club chairman and player, Ron Evans holds a special place in the history of this club," Jackson said.
"As a former AFL Commission chairman, he made a magnificent contribution to the game of AFL football.
"I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone involved with Essendon Football Club staff, players and supporters - when I pass on my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ron.
"Many of those friends were made at Essendon Football Club where he made such an outstanding contribution both as a player and an administrator.
"He was a wonderful source of advice at this club to myself and others - always articulate, measured and with the good of the game front of mind. He will be sadly missed.
"At this time our thoughts go out to his wife Andrea, his sons David and Richard and his daughter Deanne and their families. They will have many cherished memories."
The Bombers plan to honour Evans before they play Adelaide in round one of the 2007 season, on April 1.
