Australian entertainer Stuart Wagstaff, famous for various television and theatre roles including My Fair Lady and the theatrical production of The Sound of Music, has died aged 90.

The legendary entertainer whose multi-faceted career was a pinnacle in the Australian landscape of theatre, television and music passed away peacefully at Sydney's Greenwich Hospital.

Wagstaff first came to Australia in 1958 to appear in the JC Williamson production, Not in the Book, after a successful early career in England which spanned weekly tours, a couple of West End appearances, some film and television.

Wagstaff also featured in a string of television productions including Channel 10's Blankety Blanks.

He held the role of the "Beast" in the the Channel 7 show Beauty & The Beast and presented seven seasons of the ABC's Stuart Wagstaff's World Playhouse.

Wagstaff also featured in television shows G.P, Rafferty's Rules, A Country Practice, All Saints and others as well as appearing as a regular on Midday and Good Morning Australia.

When only the best will do.......and isn't that all the time?

When Stuart Wagstaff was 70 he was playing Mr Brownlow(the kind rich man) in Oliver! and one of the urchins asked him if he was famous. His answer was "No. But I once was."

One of my earliest memories of black and white TV. An erudite entertainer.

Some trivia...

Stuart Wagstaff was an aircraft fitter in the Fleet Air Arm during WWII. He attended a CPO course where his instructor was none other than HRH Phillip Mountbatten. HRH was rather keen on naval history and asked the group a series of questions on the parts of a traditional sailing ship. When it came to Wagstaff's turn HRH asked. 'Wagstaff, where is the mizzen mast?' Leading Fitter Wagstaff replied 'Oh, I did not know it was mizzen sir, if you tell me where it might be I will see that it is returned.' Wagstaff was put on a 'fizzer' for his flippancy.

Wagstaff also served with Laurence Olivier who as Wagstaff put it, as a pilot he made a brilliant actor.

Stuart Wagstaff was yet another actor who came to Australia for a month on a short term contract with JC Williamson and stayed for a lifetime. That was Australia's gain.

always liked him, classy person, well spoke, quick witted, could sing, dance, act and crack a joke....was always terrific value, sad loss..
