For me the big switch in that quarter was Docherty being moved to the backline.

He brought structure and direction. He may not be having a great game, honestly first quarter awful, but he brings a calm to the backline

Plus people being more accountable instead of letting opponents run off them

You’re right he’s never a midfielder- but we keep thinking he is.

Skip been immense. Lead from the front and was the catalyst for our overall lift in intensity !

This ain't a team that's winning the flag this year. Losing wouldn't preclude that but a champion team does not play like that first quarter...EVER.

Absolute agree. We’ve had alllllllll off season to be ready for Brisbane at the Gabba. It’s inexcusable to me to come out and seemingly be so ill prepared to compete. Hang on for dear life and try for nil-all quarter would be ok. Flood and stop the rot and be down by 2 goals would be ok. But getting blown away immediately is just hopeless. We seem to have found some interest in working hard in the second… let’s see.

Intensity lifted the second half of that quarter. Can't believe how much we trailed them that first quarter. They set up so quickly defensively you need to pressure them and move the ball quickly. The odd 50/50 free would be nice too

We're a predictable side.
When things are going well & our pressure is right, we win the ball at the source and move the ball quickly to our big forwards. The opposition is then playing off the back foot and play to the strength of our defence.
When we can't play the game on our terms, the opposition can release from stoppage/hbf with minimal pressure on the ball carrier and can pick their options when going inside 50 where most of our defenders aren't particularly great 1v1.

It's no surprise that once our pressure lifted we looked a bit better - the problem is we can't just pick and choose when to attack the man & ball. If we're to be contenders the conditional rubbish needs to go.

Just hope we have that intensity from the last 10 mins of Q2 as a base line for the second half. 31 pts is flattering with how we played for the most part.

We started taking a few more risks with our kicks between the arcs during that time and also started hunting the stoppage more. This was non existent all of Q1.

Need to start generating more drive from half back, but also need our half forwards to start providing more work ethic in the build up to a potential i50. Saad took a few risks but not in the way I was hoping he would, to open them up.

Really good last 5-10 minutes of the first half. Need to be doing that from the beginning of the second half, til the end of the game.
Sh*t luck for Coleman, hope he's ok.
Carna Blues ✊

Well, incredibly disappointing first.

Acceptable second but let's not get carried away and suggest it was anything other than the pass mark.

So slow. Terrible ball use. Zero pressure until 8 goals down.

This ain't a team that's winning the flag this year. Losing wouldn't preclude that but a champion team does not play like that first quarter...EVER.
And that's the most disappointing thing about this all. You are right, this isn't a champion team that will win the flag. It's painfully obvious. Know this team as well as we do, and we already know we're going to struggle to make the 8
