Road Trips

I always felt that reducing travel by playing two games straight away would be a good idea for us.

Fremantle could have two week road trips or three game road trips.

Thoughts ?
You could feasibly play 3 games in two weeks in Vic.

Arrive Friday, play Sunday, 7 day break, play Sunday, 6 day break, play Saturday afternoon, be back home and in their own beds by midnight Saturday. 15 days, 3 games.

They won’t give us any Friday night games, so it would then be a 7 day break before 4 home games. Club 1 & 2 arrive, play us and WC over two weekends, cross with clubs 3 & 4, who also play us and WC over 2 weekends. Each Vic team that comes over is here for 8 days max to play both teams.

Chuck in a couple of derbies, where only 2 clubs come over for a 3 week block, and were all good.

Our double ups would have to be WC and two of either both SA, both NSW or both Qld clubs, so we (or they) can ‘mini-hub’ for 2 games in each of the two states at the same time as WC.

They’ll have to fit our obligatory trip to Darwin, and WC’s trip to Hobart, but I’m sure they could work something out.

It’s totally feasible, and is a much fairer draw for all, so please insert it in you rear-end Caro Wilson.

Not a bad idea. Would you do it at the start of the season ?
Would suck balls if you lost 2 games to kick your season off.
I was thinking the same about losing two games.

History tells us that losing the first two games results in not making finals.

You would want to split 1-1.

Win both away games could set up the season as well.

Could get a repeat of this season. I wouldn't be surprised. 6 games at a Queensland hub. 7 games in WA then 4 games in Queensland hubs.

Hell if it's a 17 game season again, I can see both WA sides have 4 games in Perth, then 4 in Queensland then 4 back in Perth then 5 in Queensland again. So 8 games in WA and 9 in Queensland.

If NSW borders are fine, I can see Freo play 3-4 games there vs Giants, swans and 2 Vic sides.

Hell if SA border rules are tolerant, I can see Freo play 4 games in a row at Adelaide oval vs port, crows, hawks and dogs or Essendon.

would be better for player retention too, if we got 2 x 2 week stints vic player would have more opportunity to see their families

I am 100% in favor of this. MLB and NBA do this stuff all of the time and supporting teams from the midwest in America, it seems advantageous for the players to do their "west coast" road trip and then be done with it. You also have a time change to deal with, which isn't a huge deal, but that becomes less of an issue if you're spending three weeks on the east coast. Being in the middle of the country like a Chicago and Melbourne, there's less travel than going from Gold Coast to Perth or New York to San Francisco. I would think that doing a hub would benefit the non-Vic sides the most and I'm, of course, in favor of that. We read about how Mundy and Pav have put on a bazillion miles in travel and even JLo has commented that the travel does wear you out a bit.

Freo didn't have a drop off this year like we've had in the last 4 seasons, which is definitely due to shortened quarters and less games, but could less travel also be a factor? There's no way to quantify it, but I would think it did at some level. In a highly competitive sport, every little advantage helps.

Yeah no doubt not hopping on a plane every 2nd week would have its advantages. Just sitting at airports would be frustrating especially not being able to drink.

Its interesting how you mentioned we didnt drop off like previous years. There could be something in that with less travel as if you also look at the rugby league this year the New Zealand warriors who generally struggle every year were stuck in Australia this year and despite players mentally struggling without family and some key players goung back they have been more competitive this year then what they have for the last decade despite having 100 x challenges then previous. The under rated thing that they have noticed in regards to not travelling across the tasman every 2nd week having to go through customs and hopping on planes.

They been set up on the central coast all year in NSW and less travel has helped them not embarrass themselves like they generally do.

I quite like the idea. Reckon it would depend on where/when. 2 weeks in Queensland in July would be much better than 2 weeks in Melbourne in July.
