Roadside fishermen bashed
October 21, 2002
MOTORISTS travelling through Western Australia's north have been warned to be vigilant after the violent roadside bashing of two fishermen sleeping in their car.
The men had been napping in their vehicle, parked alongside the main highway between Carnarvon and Geraldton on Saturday morning, when a man smashed the driver's side window with a crowbar.
The stunned commercial fishermen managed to grapple the crowbar off the man - who then fired a shot into the air from a semi-automatic handgun which had telescopic sights.
The man's female accomplice, who had a knife, reportedly was filming the episode on a video camera.
The fishermen, aged 25 and 28, were taken to Carnarvon Hospital after the incident with bruises and gashes.
Police found a campfire a short distance away from the scene of the roadside incident.
But officers failed to find the man and woman, who are described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, despite weekend road blocks by armed police along the North West Coastal Highway.
Senior police have warned all motorists travelling through WA's Gascoyne and Mid West regions to be on their guard, and not to camp in remote areas or to pick up hitchhikers.
The couple is believed to be driving a white Toyota landcruiser, which has a missing right hand mirror.
